Vietnam - Palestine, 1972
ISMAIL SHAMMOUT (1930-2006)
Shammout was a leading figure in Palestinian painting. Born in Lydda in 1930 and violently displaced by the Nakba in 1948, Shammout’s design presents a vision of resistance fused to a memory of homeland. Working as the director of the PLO’s Department of National Culture, Shammout produced posters and popular education resources with direct messaging in support of national liberation
Here, Shammout recognizes the historic success of Vietnam in its fight against American imperialism. Holding their hands high, a Vietnamese soldier handing the flag of victory to a Palestinian fighter. Implied is a shared struggle against imperialism and towards liberation.
