Nous Vaincrons, Palestine, 1970
ISMAIL SHAMMOUT (1930—2006)
Translated: “We will be victorious”
Shammout is a leading figure in Palestinian painting. Born in Lydda in 1930 and violently displaced by the Nakba in 1948, Shammout’s design presents a vision of resistance fused to a memory of homeland. Working as the director of the PLO’s Department of National Culture, Shammout produced posters and popular education resources with direct messaging in support of national liberation. Here, white text lists the name of Palestinian cities and an armed guerrilla figures resistance and liberation.
