The Land, Switzerland, ca. 1986

MARC RUDIN/JIHAD MANSOUR (1945-2023)

Rudin is a Swiss born artist and radical political activist who escaped into exile in 1979. Living in Turkey, Rudin was the cover artist for the PFLP between 1979 and 1991, creating posters that were distributed throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. His illustrations have minimal text and make use of sparse blocks of color for easy printing and distribution. Before his imprisonment in Denmark, Rudin’s iconic style came to define an era in Palestinian poster-making. The Land features an abstract depiction of a woman militant and child whose faces are fractured into one. From under a Keffiyeh, the child’s hand is outstretched alongside the barrel of a gun.
