The Steadfastness of Gaza, Palestine, 1970

GHASSAN KANAFANI (1936—1972)

Born in Acre in 1936, Ghassan Kanafani was a leading Palestinian thinker, author, activist, and painter. Often referred to as “a commando who never fired a gun,” Kanafani’s lesser-known visual art was frequently used by the PFLP to promote popular resistance. In 1972, Kanafani and his niece were murdered in Beirut by the Mossad.

Steadfastness was designed by Kanafani for an international day of solidarity with Gaza. Text in Arabic, French, and English provides an international call of support for the resistance against occupation. Notable is an abstract map of Palestine, depicting Gaza in red, Palestine in black, the Dead Sea/Jordan River in blue, and ocean in white. Alongside a tree whose branches extend out above Palestine, a fighter stands tall above the Gaza strip. Kanafani centers Gaza as a site of growth and resistance which far surpasses the limitations of the borders imposed by the Zionist Regime.
