They Returned, Lebanon, 1990

MARC RUDIN/JIHAD MANSOUR (1945-2023)

Translated: “They returned.”

Marc Rudin, also known as Jihad Mansour, was a revolutionary graphic artist who designed the PFLP cover art from 1979 until 1991. Born and reared in Brene, Switzerland, his first encounter with Palestinians occurred when he graffitied squatted buildings in Porta Ticinese, Italy. He later traveled to Lebanon in 1976 and drew his first PFLP posters under the name "Jihad Mansour." In 1982, he engaged in the Palestinian resistance's defensive actions in Beirut against the Israeli army, and nearly a decade later, he was imprisoned for 8 years for robbery in support of the Palestinian resistance. While in prison, he continued to create drawings, linocuts, and woodcuts.

They Returned depicts a firm hand holding a rock overlooking the landscape of Palestine, embodying both the resilience of the people and the enduring resistance against occupation.
