Mi Corazón Se Debate Por Mis Hermanos Palestinos, USA, 1986
RENÉ CASTRO (1943 - Present)
Translated: “My heart beats for you Palestinian (and) Chilean brothers (and the) People of Central America … and of course for you, my love”
Chilean-born graphic artist, René Castro, presents a tender vision of solidarity in Mi Corazón. Translated into English as “my heart,” the text references the massive heart at the center of the image which falls below a row of skulls. These skulls make reference to the victims of oppressive violence, and likely for Castro, those of Pinochet’s violent regime. The heart, which is both anatomical and illustrated, evokes the bodily nature of violence but also the tender intimacy of loss. Ending with the personal address, “my love,” Castro highlights the overlap between his own grief and a history of colonial violence from Palestine to Central America.
