위상수학의 다양체 연구에서 세계적인 업적 성취

미국의 경험을 바탕으로 포스텍 수학과의 창립과 발전에 기여

권경환 교수님은 미국 미시간대학에서 이학박사 학위를 취득한 이후 플로리다주립대학 수학과 교수와 프린스턴 고등연구소 연구원, 미시간주립대학 수학과 교수와 학과장을 거쳐, 1990년 12월 포스텍 수학과에 부임하였습니다.

1999년 8월 정년퇴임을 하기까지 마지막 10여 년을 수학과 주임교수와 대학원장, 연구처장을 역임하여 학과 및 대학 발전에 크게 기여하셨으며, 퇴임 시 후진양성을 위해 ‘권경환 석좌기금’을 출연하셨습니다.

권경환 교수님은 ‘기하 위상수학’의 전문가로 다양체 연구 관련 40여편의 논문을 발표하였으며, 수학계의 최고 권위를 자랑하는 AMS 저널에 15편 이상의 논문을 게재하는 등 한국 수학계의 위상을 크게 높인 세계적 수학자로 인정받고 있습니다.

A world-class mathematician who enhanced the profile of Korean mathematics

Emeritus Professor Kyung Whan Kwun  has made research achievements that attracted international attention via the study of manifold in the area of topology, and is a globally renowned mathematician that has contributed to the development of mathematics in both the USA and Korea.

He graduated from the Mathematics Department of Seoul National University and received a Ph. D. from Michigan State University in 1958. Later, while working at Florida State University as a professor since 1962, he became a research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton. He joined the Mathematics Department at POSTECH in December 1990. During the last decade leading up to my retirement in August 1999, he served as the head professor of the Mathematics Department, dean of the graduate school, and dean of research affairs. He made significant contributions to the development of both the department and the university. Upon retirement, I established the 'Kyung Whan Kwun Endowment Fund' to support the development of junior faculty.
