Regardless of what type of photography you do, post-processing is usually a critical step in creating final images. While I've been using Photoshop for around a decade, I have to admit I'm still pretty slow :). It's not a surprise that I'm not alone! Photoshop does have a big learning curve and for the millions of amateur photographers and photo editors like me, you can easily end up spending hours playing with it.

After taking some time to try out a range of software programs designed for more general photo editing and management, I have recently learned about Portrait Professional, a software package that is aimed at a more specific task of improving portraits. I have to say that after only a short time with it, I'm already a big fan! What Portrait Professional offers is a quick, easy, and affordable way to edit portraits, especially for anyone who lacks speed or skill with Photoshop.

Portrait Professional provides very powerful tools to edit, touch-up, and even reshape a person's face. It gives you these tools with a very easy learning curve, thanks to the great tutorial and simple interface. After loading a photo, you are guided through some easy setup steps, before you're allowed to take over. Once the program has given you control, you can use a range of sliders to control a large array of elements. For ease-of-use, there are levels to the controls, letting you move a larger, general slider to control a whole category, or go deeper and adjust aspects of the category. Portrait Professional also offers a selection of popular automatic one-button press effects to change or improve your portrait. One of its most intense features lets you "sculpt" a person's face, changing the shape of it, seamlessly and naturally. And of course, it offers brush-like tools to accurately touch up or remove blemishes.

So, Portrait Professional is perfect for anyone who isn't a pro at Photoshop or even a pro Photoshop user who wants to make a quick touch up job of a photo. Also, don't forget that for $20 more, you can get the Studio version that integrates with Photoshop. The only issue I found using this program was the ease of overdoing any touch up or edit (which is my fault, not the program's, of course). Once you get more in-depth with the functions, you'll get the most out of the very fine level of control offered.

Finally, I have to mention the free trial of Portrait Professional lets you play with all the features of the paid version, so you know exactly what you're getting. The only limit is that it puts a big demo watermark on all of your edited photographs, meaning you can't save any of them to use. If find this to be a great upfront way to demo a piece of software, so don't hesitate to give the trial version a go!

This screen shows the original photo on the left and the initial automatically edited version on the right. You can revert the right image to the original and make all the changes yourself. Note the seven slider categories on the right. Each of them expands to show a range and additional levels of sliders and options.

The right photo now shows a much heavier use of preset tools in use. On top of the Young Woman Glamorous, I've added Remove Wrinkles, Bigger Eyes, Darken Hair, and Smooth and Thicken Hair, I've also left open the Skin Control slider menu on the right, showing just a part of the huge selection of user-friendly edits you can make. Even with several layers of preset effects (no additional tampering by me), it still looks more believable than most of the photos seen in Cosmo or Maxim magazines.

Portrait Professional or PortraitPro is a portrait photography retouching software developed by Anthropics Technology and initially released in 2006. It automates the photo editing process with algorithms that manipulate facial features, remove skin imperfections, alter colors and tone, replace the background, and so on.[1] It is available as a standalone application, as well as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, and Aperture plug-ins on Windows and OS X systems.[2]

PortraitPro was released in 2006 by Anthropics Technology, a company founded in 1997 as the research branch of the UK National Film and Television School. The algorithms that allowed the software to identify facial features, assess the "attractiveness", and adjust the photo were developed in conjunction with researchers from Cambridge University, Oxford University, and Manchester University. The program initially required an active internet connection to calculate point data for face shaping, but moved to a standalone edition with version 6.[3]

PortraitPro 9 (2009) introduced the novel ClearSkin automated skin enhancer, which corrects skin defects, such as acne, blotchiness, roughness, wrinkles, age spots, and so on.[4] Version 10 (2012) added a specialized Child mode that applies enhancements suitable for the portraits of children.[5][6] In PortraitPro 12 (2014) the developers presented lighting and relighting effects based on a 3D model of the face built based on a 2D photo, and full optimization 64-bit systems, which provided a notable performance leap.[7]

PortraitPro is available in Standard, Studio, and Studio Max editions. A basic standalone edition supports JPG and 24-bit TIFF files. Studio adds support for RAW and 48-bit coloc, conversion between color spaces and JPEG/TIFF embedded color profile support. It also enables batch editing. Studio Max is marketed as a professional tool with enhanced batch mode.[13] Studio and Studio Max editions also work as plug-ins[14] for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, and Aperture.[15]

Portrait Professional from Anthropics technology is software for quick and easy portrait retouching. It can be purchased directly from It is available as Standard, Studio and Studio 64 versions. The primary benefits of the Studio version are support for RAW images, color profiles and the ability to launch it as a plug-in directly from Photoshop. The version used for this review is Portrait Professional 10.1 Studio 64 Edition.

Even though Portrait Professional can open RAW images directly, my workflow starts with Adobe Lightroom 3. The RAW image was adjusted by slightly increasing the exposure and recovery sliders, to ensure that the background remains pure white but no details gets lost in the portrait itself.

I purchased Portrait Professional 9and 10 and I had constant problems with saving the work after updating my portraits. The company keeps removing my rights to save my work after I paid full price. I do not recommend working with Portrait Professional, you can't get any assistance on line and there is no number to call. After they get your money, you are on your own basicall without the softward you purchased. Very disappointed customer.

I try a lot of different photography software and most of it ends up uninstalled and not purchased, since I usually find that what I already have is better. At this point my entire arsenal of photography software includes:

This next portrait is of a young Asian female. This time my goal was to more dramatically enhance her face. I used some face sculpting to alter her features, changed and lightened up her eye color, enhanced her skin and lips:

Finally, I decided to try my hand at a more fantastical portrait. I decided upon a stock image from the lovely faestock on DeviantArt. She is already beautiful and almost flawless, but I wanted to create a more surreal lit-up look. Here is my final result:

If you get into frequency separation you can do advanced skin retouching like a professional glamour or fashion photographer. You can clone and heal like a madman, removing unwanted items from the subject or background.

Luminar Neo is a great software choice if you are brand new to photo editing and want to beat the steep learning curve of other options. If you use Lightroom as your main editor and want some additional tools in your arsenal it works great as a plugin as well.

In my own personal workflow, I do the basic edits for exposure, color, and contrast in Lightroom. Then I take the image into Luminar Neo to do the portrait editing. The tools in Luminar Neo are easier to use than Photoshop, and it gets better results and has more options than Lightroom.

Based on my tests of each, my software of choice for the best portrait editor is still Luminar Neo. I may purchase PortraitPro for myself but I think for you it may be more than you need or a bit of overkill.

If you are a total beginner (in photography and/or photo editing) I would suggest Luminar Neo for you. Its ease of use and the shorter learning curve will have you up and running with great results faster!
