They were never meant to meet.
They were never meant to be friends.
And they were definitely never meant to fall in love.

More than an hour away from anything in the Rocky Mountains of northwest Montana, Cable Glen presents itself as a small mining town, right next to the Fort Hope Mine. Looking in the distance is Phantom Peak, the original location of the former Army Outpost and stage stop. The quaint town never has property for sale, it never has any tourists stumble into town, and yet the town seems to thrive. What the families, and the public, don't know is that it's a secret military base hiding in plain sight.

Why should I read this book?
It will be unlike anything you've read before. Amazon allows authors to give suggestions and recommendations and one of the options is say which book or author you are like. It puzzles me. I have not read another author who is "like" me, with my writing style, or even content. I cannot say, "read this book if you like....Whomever." Because I can't exactly say who. I write books I would enjoy reading myself. I can't compare myself to the likes of big named authors who have been around forever because I am a self-published author at this point. But I will say read this book if you like to watch TV shows that have a well developed plot with well loved characters that involve the military, secret military, a little love story, good guys vs. bad guys, and family ties. Read it if you like underdogs, impossible odds, and a fresh perception. Read this book if you want to read a series and if you want to have an adventure like you've not had before. Read this book because I wrote it for me and was never going to let the rest of you read it. Ever.

05/26/2025 -- My kids llllooooovvvveeee audiobooks. The longer the book, the more hours it takes, the better it is for them. My older two have dyslexia so this is how they "read" novel upon novel, and series upon series. And they are why I wanted to get my books available as audiobooks because dyslexia doesn't just go away after a certain age. It makes reading books a chore for adults too.
I am excited to announce that Portrait of an Unlikely Affair, the start of my six-book-series, is now available to listen to on Audible. It is over 13 hours long. The second in the series is in the works to become an audiobook too very shortly. Although the narrator is no Mike Rowe, I think you'll still manage to enjoy the book.
It is the beginning of an adventure, the start of a clean love story, that will take you over a span of twenty years and bring you along on a roller coaster ride you won't forget. Leave all expectations behind.

It’s 1995 and an adventure of improbable events begins with movie royalty and a classified weapon arriving in Cable Glen on the same day -- Two worlds such as these were never meant to collide.
She captivates the public simply by being herself. Avonlea Stone is the sweetheart of film and television, living a fairy tale in the eyes of her fans, the public, and the media. Her life was an open book until she was attacked by a stalker, which shattered her faith in the world and sent her into hiding. Over a year later, she never expected her new boyfriend, Connor Jones, would be the key to finding the very thing she did not know she was missing. He asks her to go home to meet his parents who reside in a small mining town called Cable Glen in northwest Montana. Today’s the day Connor and Avonlea arrive to meet Connor’s mother Jan and her husband, Tom Ridley.
Cable Glen is a complicated small town with its truth hidden in plain sight and it takes a lot to keep it that way. The town’s patriarch is Judge Thomas Ridley but being a judge is just optics. Tom is a general in a very classified military unit that makes its home in Cable Glen. Today the deadliest soldier in the world is arriving to Cable Glen and Tom is hopeful. Known as 249, this soldier has long been designated as a weapon, not a human, and is the only surviving soul of the feared unit known as Oscar Company. 249 holds answers in his mind, solutions to the massacre of his Company, as well as specialized training that died with the very people who created him. 249 also has a rare terminal disease and time is ticking. Tom knows that the loss of 249 will be a devastating personal blow to him as he knows 249 by another name – Brian, Tom’s middle son. Wracked with guilt, Tom is bringing 249 to Cable Glen so he can oversee whatever time his son has left.
And today Tom has forgotten that he is meeting his stepson Connor and Connor’s new girlfriend at the airport.
Today a series of unlikely events is about to occur.
This is just the beginning of a six-book adventure that entangles the reader in life, love, and honor.
Portrait of an Unlikely Affair kicks off the six-novel series that bears its name. It is a tale of serendipity, secrets, tests of courage and faith, love, action, and adventure.

I've seen what these characters look like in my mind for 35 years so with the AI Text to Image feature, I decided to see what AI thinks they look like. Many readers say that AI got it pretty close to how they see them. Except, my faithful readers are quick to point out that this 'version' of Brian is not from the first two books, when he is recovering. They seem to point out that this version is likely him in The Ghost of Oscar, which is book 3 of the series. And that is a very valid point .
When we meet Brian Ridley, he tends to wish to blend in. He is a good looking man, with gray eyes and dark brown hair that tends to have red highlights. If Brian's older brother looks like their father, and his older sister looks like their mother, then Brian is the blend of the two. Women do notice him, flirt with him, and attempt to get his attention, but he doesn't notice. He knows the truth behind himself -- he is a classified weapon who is not meant to walk among the world, have relationships, and carry on a normal life. He also carries a terminal label from a rare disease that has no cure. He has focused his entire being on being able to do his job -- In fact his whole focus is completing the one mission he failed and he knows has limited time left. He's had a hard life, one that would break anyone, and yet he still stands, with limited days ahead.
Avonlea Stone. She's a celebrity, an actress, but as we meet. her, we learn that she's not what we expect fame to be. She's been in the spotlight the majority of her life. Her hair color does change, mostly leaning toward the lighter side with blonde highlights, but her natural color is light brown. She is beautiful, there's no doubting, with green eyes. When she first meets Brian, she is dressed very casually, but not exactly "movie star casual" as you would imagine from today's stars. She keeps herself looking as a normal person would dress, without the obvious 'look at me I'm famous' accessories that come stars often bear, even when casual. It seems to me that she does consider herself a 'normal human being' and has a good heart, expecting nothing in return.
So, nothing about these two screams "Meant to Be!!!" does it? How does a down-to-Earth yet popular celebrity fall for a classified weapon with no charm and no people skills?

A.I. Genearted Visuals of the Portrait of an Unlikely Affair series Characters
How do these images compare to your imaginarion? In my mind, they are not completely "spot on" as my imagination is better than A.I. but it is interesting to see what A.I. thinks they look like based on words.
