Summer 2024
Character concepting, 3D modeling, and animation.
This project took place over 10 weeks during Summer 2024. The goal was to create a character design that would then be used to create a unique running animation within blender. This was used to build my skills in both character creation, as well as my skills in blender rigging and animation.
My Initial Ideas for this project was to have a character that would fit into a fantasy setting. I really enjoyed this idea of a waistcoat inspired by butterfly wings.
On the left is the final Character sheet used when modeling. This is where I solidified the color palette I intended to use as well. On the right a Separate illustration made to think a little more about how the character should look in 3D.
This was a lot of trial and error and working within blender. Definitely helped improve my skills and understanding of the Blender UI better.
Sculpting the head was one of the best parts of this process. The retopology was worthwhile to have a head that looked good while being easier to read than the sculpted head.
Textures were done in Substance Painter and probably the most time consuming processes. Using substance painter was a learning process but definitely a beneficial one.
Rigging and animation were done in blender. Lots of trial and error with weight paint and posing.
This Final Animation was rendered in Blender and converted to GIF format through an external website. The end result is an accumulation of weeks of work and the learning and advancement of my skills.
