An air cooler works by drawing the hot air into the pads, which then runs over the iced water in the wick, this then extracts the heat and returns it as cool, this is called an endothermic reaction.

The reason for this is during the process it produces humidity, this humidity needs to be removed to the outside of the building via an open window.
