Mitski Miyawami is one of the most prominent rising female indie starlets currently in the scene. As an student in Purchase College she self-released her piano/orchestra-based albums Lush (2012) and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business (2013), as student projects, as expected both releases went unnoticed until after she became famous. After singing with Double Wammy Records, Mitski released Bury Me At Makeout Creek in 2014, a departure from her previous with a larger presence of guitar and even some punk sensibilities; the release was wildly acclaimed and it brought her attention from the specialized press. Her fourth album, Puberty 2, was released under Dead Oceans in 2016; a mixture of D.I.Y. punk and indie rock with pop sensibilities, the release saw widespread acclaim and made multiple year-end lists, it was also her first record to chart elsewhere. 2018's Be The Cowboy is considered her breakthrough release, as the eclectic release topped multiple year-end lists and managed to outpeak all of her previous releases with ease.
Although mostly confined to the indie circles, Mitski has been noticed in mainstream circles after having opener tours for Pixies and Lorde, collaborated with Bleachers and having appeared in soundtracks of movies like the 2020 Finn Wolfhard horror film The Turning and the animated show Adventure Time.
