"Timo" and "Sparrow" Capture the 2024 Pond Sprint
Teenager and 50-something win the short-course race
Local Adirodack racers Timothy "Timo" Ziegler and Annie "Sparrow" Preston were the overall winners at the 2024 Pond Sprint 12.5 mile/two mountain race, held October 12 in Willsboro, NY.
Ziegler, 22 from Saranac Lake, finished in a time of 1:44:57. Andrew Gonzalez finished less than a minute behind, while women's champion Annie "Sparrow" Preston (Lewis, NY) took third place overall.
In the five-mile/one mountain short course, the overall title went to 13-year old Eli LaBrake, 49:42, two and one-half minutes up on his uncle Tom Moffett. 2023 winner Gege Fliss repeated as women's champ in a time of 51:59.
The 11th edition of Pond Sprint was held in conjunction with Pok-O-MacCready's fall family weekend, on a perfect day. Aside from great racing (34 runners and seven hikers), participants enjoyed a "Pondertoberfest" German style post-race picnic. Following expenses, about $2800 was raised for the event's two beneficiaries: Adirondack Scholarship Foundation and Lond Pond Conservancy.
"After a rain filled washout in 2023, this year's Pond Sprint was highlighted by a perfect, crisp, bluebird autumnal day," reviewed race director and ADKSF board member Jacob Gittler. "The full half marathon races were close, competitive, & down to the wire. And we had the youngest winner in the race's history take home the five-mile crown. That middle schooler really needs to consider cross country! Participants were then treated to an amazing post-race PondtoberFest filled with sunshine, burgers, dogs, pretzels, beers, and awards, all while raising money for the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation & the Long Pond Conservancy. How can you beat that?! It was an absolute blast. Huge thank you to Pok-O-MacCready for hosting this event, and to all the volunteers who help make the Pond Sprint possible each year. We can't wait to see everyone in 2025 for both the Patch Sprint and Pond Sprint race and reunions!"
Congratulations to all of the runners, with a special thanks to the over dozen volunteers who helped put on the event!
