The Polo from Margarita is sung in octosyllabic or hendecasyllabic verses with varying rhyme schemes. Typically the stanzas are composed of four verses, and common rhyme schemes include ABAB and ABBA. Traditionally, however, the polo, like the malaguea and galern has been sung in dcima form, that is, ten verses of eight syllables each, with an "ABBAACCDDC" rhyme scheme. It is typical for each verse in the polo to be sung twice, which has lent to it being sung as a duet on occasion.[1]

The theme of the polo's lyrics are typically centered around life in the island of Margarita and the states of Sucre, and Anzotegui. As a result, the imagery and habits of coastal life are frequently the subject of the polo, as evidenced by the following stanza:[2]

The theme of love is also common in polos, both as isolated stanzas and as the main focus of the text. Some artists who illustrate the romantically-oriented polo include Gualberto Ibarreto and the quartet Serenata Guayanesa. An excerpt of the "Polo de la soledad"[3] (Polo of solitude) by Serenata reads as follows:

The harmonic structure cycles between an initial major key and its relative minor. The basic progression can be described as III(I)-VII(V7)-i-V7 (the Roman numerals in parentheses represent chord functions in the initial major key). This basic harmonic form evidences the origins of the polo in the Spanish Renaissance, as the progression is known as the Romanesca. This basic version has been recorded by Cecilia Todd.

Likewise when playing in front of a crowd, do you feel a lot of responsibility when playing music within UK funky, Ampiano, Afro house that the crowd might have never heard before? Or just in general in playing music from the African Diaspora?

BeatTips: Do you want to hear from the people who actually use your sounds?

Marco Polo: Absolutely. I want to. I want people to post the beats. To talk about it. And I want them to give me feedback, because I want to do more of these. And I want to be helpful to people. My whole thing is to give you my sounds, but to also inspire music, and also inspire digging, man. Like, go dig. You know, go find shit and have fun with it.

Disco polo is a uniquely Polish type of dance music, consisting of upbeat electronic songs with simple lyrics. It emerged in the early 1990s as a blend of convivial folk music and Italo disco, a pop genre employing drum machines and synthesisers.

Originally disco polo was enjoyed in villages and smaller towns, the choice of the more rural parts of Polish society. It gained prominence in 1994, when the private TV network Polsat started airing Disco Relax, a nationwide broadcast devoted to the genre. This was when bands such as Boys and Bayer Full became known to big-city audiences.

Those in charge of TVP are said to have a different view of the whole affair. By presenting disco polo, they are simply responding to popular demand, serving their remit of providing entertainment to the masses. Besides, disco polo helps TVP to broaden its audience, and it is only natural for a media outlet to want to do that.

Moreover, disco polo also allows TVP to exploit the aforementioned issue of the negative connotations of ruralness. By showing that it accepts rural vibes, the public broadcaster is saying that, far from being something to be ashamed of, ruralness is now part of the publicly endorsed mainstream.

Of course, this concept of using disco polo for political gain is nothing new. Politicians from various parties, like the former left-wing president Aleksander Kwaniewski, have used disco polo songs in their campaigns to give them a warmer image. What is new is that the PiS-dependent TVP seems to be playing the disco polo card on a regular basis. Previously, it was only at election time that political actors flirted with the genre.

Moreover, disco polo has in recent years gained some popularity in bigger cities like Warsaw and Katowice. Many of the fiercest critics of its first incarnation have grown to see it as harmless entertainment or even something with a unique, specifically Polish value. On the whole, while cultured circles may still not be fans of the genre, they tend not to be as openly hostile as they once were.

Secondly, Poles today have access to a very broad range of TV networks, be it online, cable or traditional. Unlike in the communist era, when the state held a TV monopoly and all you could watch were public broadcasts, today anyone can change the channel. If you are listening to disco polo on TVP, this is your choice. So when TVP provides audiences with disco polo content, in most cases it is simply preaching to the choir.

This engaging piece for string orchestra is appropriate for any time of the year but is especially fun for a summer orchestra concert. Arco Polo is a musical depiction of the well-known swimming-pool game Marco Polo. The piece begins tutti pizzicato, but then the instruments "call out" to each other using their bows. This is a multilevel piece which makes it a practical choice for an orchestra with students at varying skill levels. It can stand alone as a Level 1.5 piece, but with the addition of the advanced violin, viola, and cello parts it becomes even more challenging and fun. For yet another layer of fun, there is an optional improvisational section where students are randomly (perhaps secretly) selected to be the "caller" and the rest of the orchestra answers. As an extra surprise for the orchestra and audience, an audience member can be cued to literally call out to the orchestra.

Polo Noir returns for the 2nd year. Featuring two live Polo Matches, music from 3x Grammy Award Winner Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers and Portland Singer-Songwriter Redray Frazier Band, and award-winning Willamette Valley Wine.

The rebrand worked. The music eventually became so popular that politicians, including former president Aleksander Kwaniewski, used it in their election campaigns. It seemed, then, that disco polo had real potential to go international.

But disco polo fans took this in their stride, even making "Mydeko Fa", a parody song written by esteemed electronic music producer Andrzej Korzyski into a hit, proving that the genre could thrive even under the guise of pastiche. However, perhaps because it was never embraced by the gatekeepers, or because nothing lasts forever, by the early-2000s disco polo began to flounder.

Fast forward to 2018, and much like the undying love for the 90s that defines British youth today, Poles too have nostalgically rediscovered things like Communist-era milk bars, the street food zapiekanka and, indeed, disco polo. Here in the UK, that revival plays an additional role.

Working in a factory for seven years before turning his hand to disco polo events in 2015, Puszczakowski follows in the footsteps of Blue Star's Skrta, who seemingly turned to releasing disco polo for its monetary potential, rather than because of his love for the sound. "I listen to rock music at home," Puszczakowski confirms.

Marco Polo, an opera within an opera, marks a further stage in the composer Tan Dun's own spiritual journey, an exploration of a new language of music and performing arts through the fusion of Western avant-garde style with Eastern accent. Multi-cultural elements such as Peking Opera, Kabuki, Indonesian shadow theatre, and the face painting of Tibetan ritual are used. It has a duration under two hours, and plays without intermission.

In Marco Polo, the spiritual journey (the cycle of the spirit and of Nature), coexists with a physical journey from West to East. The former is explored in the Book of Timespace sections of the opera through the participation of Shadows, Memory, and Nature in a Peking-opera style. Interwoven are the legendary adventures of Marco Polo as he makes his journey from Italy to China. These sections are written in a more Western operatic style combining avant-garde and theatrical traditions and are played out by Beings, although with underlying echoes of the simultaneous spiritual journey provided by historical figures Dante, Shakespeare, and Li Po.

Along with the geographical journey from West to East there is an important musical journey. Above the orchestra and chorus, there is a spicy ensemble of medieval European, Indian, Tibetan, and Chinese instruments which illustrate the changing scenes of the geographic journey. The fantasy-dream world of the spiritual journey and the exciting stories of Marco Polo's voyage are two operas that merge with the same goal, the discovery of experience from past to present to future -- from the known to the unknown.
