The Department of Political Science, Madhya Kamrup College, was established along with the college on 9 August 1971 and is one of the oldest departments of the institution. It was established with the objective of providing higher education to the people of the Chenga area, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The department began its journey with around 105 students at the Pre-University level and one teacher. Over the years, it has grown academically through the contribution of dedicated and experienced faculty members.
At present, the department has three faculty members with specializations in Political Process, Public Administration, Indian Political Philosophy and Classical Political Philosophy. The department focuses on developing students' understanding of political concepts, critical and analytical thinking, communication skills, research aptitude and employability. The department adopts diverse teaching-learning methods, including lesson plans, classroom discussions, debates, audio-visual aids, maps and charts, remedial classes, peer teaching and problem-based learning. It also organizes lectures, workshops, seminars, debates and other student enrichment programmes.
With facilities such as a departmental library, computer, Wi-Fi and digital classrooms, the department strives to provide a supportive academic environment. It is committed to academic excellence, research, holistic development, social responsibility and preparing students for higher education and future career opportunities.
