Completion of the JRFT is a requirement for successful recruitment to the role of a police officer. The core rationale for the JRFT is to ensure that prospective police officers have a minimum level of fitness to be able to undertake PST training. The standard identified for recruits was extended to serving officers in 2014 following the endorsement of the Winsor Review (Part II) recommendations. This annual test is only applicable for those officers who require PST as part of their role.

The 15m MSFT involves running up and down (a shuttle run) a 15-metre track. It is timed against a series of audio beeps and the participant must 'beat the bleep' and complete the shuttle before they hear the sound.

The standard needed for an officer who requires PST as part of their role is 5.4 which means running at least in time with the bleeps for four shuttles at level 5. The whole test takes 3 minutes and 35 seconds and covers 525m.

This test takes place on a treadmill. After a suitable warm up the subject is required to walk at a brisk pace (6km/hr) on the treadmill. Every two minutes the gradient is raised by 3% for a specific amount of time. The length of time an individual must continue depends on the kind of policing role.

If a disability or medical condition makes it difficult to complete the standard fitness test, some forces offer an alternative test, where candidates can walk or run on a treadmill, with the gradient increasing over time. If this applies to you, we'd recommend getting in touch with your preferred force to discuss what alternatives they can offer.

The Trooper Physical Ability Test consists of three subtests. A minimum performance score is required on each of the subtests: sit-ups, push-ups and the 1.5 mile run. The tests are scored in a pass/fail manner. Minimum entry level fitness norms have been set at the 50th percentile, based upon the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research.

Minimum graduation level fitness norms have been set at the 70th percentile, based upon the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research. In order to graduate from the New York State Police Academy, a recruit must perform at the 70th percentile in each of the subtests: sit-ups, push-ups and the 1.5 mile run.

You will have no bother with the bleep test it's 5.4 for England and Wales which is 3 and a half minutes of running. By doing the programme it will help your endurance just be mindful that the bleep test is running to a point and stopping then running again so slightly different. That said you can time it right so that you cross the line with minimal stopping and starting just start slowly with it you'll quickly recognise the speed you need.

Hi, you can run the test on you tube, I use it to practise with. I am using this programme to try and get to pass the bleep test. Failed my first attempt at 3.4 and have my second go next week. Am on week 3 of the C25K, so hoping this has helped. Wish I had thought of it sooner as I could have been nearly at the end of the programme by now! How did you get on with yours?

I got a police fitness test coming up in a few weeks which consists of a bleep test and you need to reach 5.4 (UK this is). I'm generally pretty active at the gym 5 days a week for 1 hour to 90min mostly cardio on treadmill, cross trainer, StairMaster, rowing etc.

Beep tests are generally not too difficult, and given your exercise routine I would say that you will likely be fine. I would however suggest doing a couple of practices before the real thing. Settling into a good rhythm is key, as many people start off too fast. The beep tracks are widely accessible for download and it easy enough to lay out a 15m course in your gym, or a local park.

Anyway was practising bleep test over the last couple of days, funny thing is with this I seem to be getting out of breath quickly and my legs hurting at times (but still managed to get Level 5), might need to give it more practice, but at the same time I never measured 15 meters just guest I think I was running 20m while listening to a 15m bleep test and was not in sync

@SunsetRunner Here is the "bleep" video for all to view from the UK Metropolitan Police Force... Very extensive and obviously need preparation.. Go for it... you are well on your way... and from my reading it's very comprehensive when you look at these Bleep test images..

We will test your fitness during the recruitment process, initial training and on an annual basis throughout your MDP career, to ensure you continue to maintain the required fitness standard for your role. This is called a Job-Related Fitness Test (JRFT).

All New Recruits are required to pass the Physical Employment Standards Job-Related Fitness Test (PES-JRFT), as well as PC and PS ranks joining us from another police force. If recruited at Inspector rank or above you will need to pass either the Multi-stage Fitness Test (MSFT) or Police Chester Treadmill Test (CTT).

If you are joining us a New Recruit, or new entrant from another police force at PC or PS rank, you will be required to pass the MDP Physical Employment Standards Job-Related Fitness Test (PES-JRFT).

You will complete the test upon application, then again during the first week of your initial training. As a New Recruit you will be tested a total of four times from application through to the end of your course.

For the next part of the test you will once again wear a 20kg weighted vest whilst dragging a weighted dummy of 76-kg, for 20-metres in 20 seconds. This will be done by a double overhand grip of the back strap of the dummy, which you will hold behind your head, keeping the dummy at a 45-degree angle and moving backwards until you have reached 20-metres.

There is currently no requirement for you to be able to swim to join us. However, where officers in the Force are looking to transfer to or join one of our Marine Units, they are required to undertake a swimming test as part of the selection process.

If you have already registered your interest previoulsy then just turn up. The test is fairly quick so you don't need to book. Make sure you bring a form of identification with you on the day. To see our upcoming fitness dates, click here.

Completion of the job related fitness test is a requirement for successful recruitment to the role of a police officer. The core rationale for this test is to ensure that prospective police officers have a minimum level of fitness to be able to undertake their role. The standard identified for recruits is a level 5.4.

The standard needed for a police constable is 5.4, which means running at least in time with the bleeps for four shuttles at level 5. The whole test takes 3 minutes and 35 seconds in total and covers 525m. The test will not go beyond level 5.4.

Your objective is to cover the 15m shuttle prior to the next levels bleep sounding. If you get to the line prior to this bleep, you cannot set off again until the bleep sounds. You cannot run in advance of the bleep.

If you fail to cover the 15m shuttle prior to the next bleep you will be issued with your first warning. You should continue running, making every attempt to catch up. This means completing the failed shuttle, and then attempting to complete the next shuttle that is already in progress.

If you are unable to complete the relevant shuttle, you will be issued with a second warning. The process repeats. If you are able to complete the failed shuttle or shuttles without missing another bleep, your warning will reset.

If you are unable to complete the relevant shuttle, you will be out of warnings, the third strike will eliminate you from the test. You must achieve level 5.4. This means you must complete this shuttle. The test will be stopped prior to the commencement of level 5.5. If you have not completed the 5.4 shuttle you have failed the test. No warnings can be given after the test has ended.

Below you will find a video describing the test in detail. You will be able to observe a test being run in the background so that you visualise this process if it is something that you are unfamiliar with.

In the past, the minimum requirement to pass the bleep test was higher than its current level. However, for some reason, unbeknownst to many, the required pass mark was drastically reduced. Evidence suggests that the current police fitness test is in fact, relatively difficult to pass. Statistics show that in the past year, hundreds of officers have failed to make it through the physical stage of the assessment.

So why change it? Well, consider this. While the test has weeded out hundreds of officers, there are many thousands of applicants to the police force each year. If only a few hundred are being turned away at the physical assessment stage, then how many candidates are being let through this stage? Do all of these candidates really have the physical capability to stop criminals? That is not to say we should be hiring less police officers, but the reality is that a bleep test level of 5.4 is not particularly hard to reach. The majority of these officers go into the test with limited physical preparation, and still pass quite comfortably.

Simply put, the test needs to be more rigorous. To reach a level of 5.4 in the bleep test requires very little preparation. It is the equivalent of running at 5.5mph for 3 and a half minutes. In our opinion, this means that the minimum should be upped. Instead of making the minimum 5.4, raise it to a more demanded and appropriate level of 10 instead.

One of the other fitness issues facing the police, is the lack of on the job testing. By the current requirements, officers must reach a minimum of 5.4 in the bleep test on annual basis. They are given three chances to pass this test. This is an incomprehensible number, for such an easy to achieve task. Our suggestion is to move the minimum mark up, and drop the allowed attempts by at least 1. Furthermore, officers should have to partake in rigorous physical training days, including assault and obstacle courses. This would more accurately reflect the activities that they must engage in while performing the role. ff782bc1db
