Production and Logistics Planning for a Global Mould Manufacturing Company

Sim Chuen Hwee

Abstract

The goal of this project is to research the production and logistics planning of a global injection mould manufacturing company. This is to find the most efficient method to manufacture mould in Singapore.

The current method for the company in Singapore is to outsource the mould to a supplier to fabricate their mould, as the company does not have factories in Singapore. The test trial and mass production are usually done at another oversea branch. However, when defects or errors are found, extra time and effort are needed to ship back the error components back to Singapore for suppliers to modify them. Therefore, the company is thinking of setting up a factory in Singapore.

However, to test whether it is worth setting up a new factory, the company is comparing the production method of mould fabrication. Thus, this project will be using job shop scheduling with past data as a case study to test for the manufacturing time of the mould. Then using Multiple-Criteria Decision Making for the selection of suppliers based on company criteria. Lastly, a cost-effectiveness analysis will be done to compare these two fabrication methods to conclude whether the company should set up a new factory in Singapore.
