MR. P. NELSON
COURSE DESCRIPTION
(Year-long course) The AP Statistics course prepares students for success on the national Advanced Placement Statistics exam and it is strongly recommended that students take the exam. Depending on his or her score and the policies of the college or university the student chooses to attend, he or she may receive actual college credit. This course is intended to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students who successfully complete the course and examination may receive credit, advanced placement, or both for a one-semester introductory college course. The course carries a weighted grade. It is highly recommended, but not required, that the student purchase a TI-83+ graphing calculator.
TOPIC OUTLINE AND OVERVIEW:
The AP Statistics course introduces students to statistics and prepares students for the national AP exam. Students are introduced to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data, focusing on four broad themes:
Exploration: Observing patterns and departure from patterns.
Research studies design
Production models using probability theory and simulation
Statistical inference
Per semester, grades will be weighted as follows: Tests/Announced Quizzes (50%), Final Exam (20%), Homework Problems/Pop Quizzes (20%), Chapter Definitions (10%)
Pop Quizzes
Pop quizzes are based on the material covered in previous lectures (cumulative) and are more conceptual in nature. These are unannounced and taken on a random basis, consisting of one or two questions each. Should you miss a pop quiz, you will be able to make one up only if your absence is excused. Students should expect that make-up pop quizzes will consist of different questions than those on the missed pop quiz. It is highly recommended that you spend ten minutes (just 10 is sufficient) every evening to study your statistics lecture notes. If you do this routinely and consistently, you will not only do well on pop quizzes but you will keep up and be prepared for new material as well. The pop quizzes are designed to ensure that students retain material covered in the course and are intended to ensure that students study their lecture notes routinely and consistently.
Tests
AP-style tests will be given at the end of each chapter. The exam problems will be similar to the homework problems. In order to successfully prepare for such exams, students will need to closely study all concepts covered in lecture, all concepts associated with the definitions they have turned in, and all homework problems. To review for the semester I final exam, study all of the material for chapters 1 - 6 and carefully study exam problems from chapters 1 - 6. For the final exam and the national AP exam, students will review by completing AP practice exams.
A graphing calculator is required for this class. I recommend a TI-83 or TI-84. A TI-89 or a TI-Nspire is also acceptable. Although there are other graphing calculators available, these are the ones supported by my class materials. Graphing is very important in this class. When you are asked to graph in an exercise, you may:
Copy the graph from your calculator screen onto a standard grid.
Copy the graph from your calculator screen onto regular paper, with the viewing window indicated.
Print a screenshot of your graph. Your calculator may have been packaged with a graph link cable. I will gladly help you to learn to print screen shots.
