STATEMENT | 8 SEPTEMBER, 2025
We express our deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by the tragic loss of at least 19 lives, and the injuries of over a hundred individuals, resulting from recent demonstrations across Nepal. These Generational Z–led protests emerged in response to a government-imposed ban on 26 social media platforms and widespread frustration over corruption, nepotism, and limited opportunities for youth.
The scale and intensity of the unrest—spanning Kathmandu and other major cities—underscore deep-rooted grievances among young Nepalis yearning for political accountability and freedom of expression
Although the government has since lifted the social media ban, notably restoring access to platforms like Facebook and YouTube, and announced compensation and healthcare support for victims, the momentum of the protests has not abated. Calls for comprehensive political reform and structural change continue to resonate across the nation. We strongly condemn the disproportionate use of force against largely peaceful demonstrators and urge all authorities to commit to restraint and respect for human rights.
We call on the Government of Nepal to urgently implement the announced investigation within 15 days, ensuring it is transparent, independent, and includes civil society participation. We uphold the democratic rights of Nepalis especially the youth—to peaceful assembly, free expression, and political participation—and affirm that systemic reforms must prioritize these principles. We urge the international community, including the UN and regional bodies, to monitor developments closely, support peaceful transitions, and ensure that human rights standards are upheld.
Let this moment mark the beginning of a genuine commitment to inclusive dialogue, socio-economic reform, and accountable governance—rooted in the aspirations of Nepal’s new generation.
