If you want a compact, lightweight solution for weekend adventures and beach trips where every pound counts, choose PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier; if you need maximum volume for family vacations and bulky gear, choose Maxsa Innovations Rooftop Cargo Carrier.
• The Trade-off: The PM model saves on wind resistance and vehicle load but sacrifices internal volume, while the Maxsa model offers significantly more room but sits heavier on the roof rack.
• Who is this for?: Choose PM for agile driving and tight spaces; choose Maxsa when you simply cannot fit your gear anywhere else.
The PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier is built for the driver who values aerodynamics and ease of handling over sheer volume. Its dimensions, measuring 53 inches in length, 34 inches in width, and 15 inches in height, create a relatively low-profile box that sits comfortably on most cross bars. This smaller footprint means it won't block rearview visibility as much as larger alternatives, and its textured black ABS plastic finish helps it blend seamlessly with the aesthetic of many modern SUVs and crossovers.
This carrier shines when you are heading out for a day trip or a short getaway. The 14-inch wide opening is sufficient for standard suitcases, camping chairs, and a cooler, making it ideal for beach trips where you might only need towels, umbrellas, and a few snacks rather than a week's worth of supplies. The hard shell construction provides peace of mind against rain and UV rays, ensuring your gear stays dry without the bulk of a soft bag. Because it is lighter and less voluminous, it creates less drag on the highway, which can help maintain better fuel economy compared to larger boxes.
However, if you are planning a cross-country move or a family vacation with three people, this unit will likely feel too small. The 110-pound weight limit restricts how much heavy equipment you can pack, such as multiple large coolers or heavy luggage sets. The installation process is tool-free, using ABS plastic mounting brackets that attach quickly to factory or aftermarket cross bars, which is convenient, but the fixed size means you cannot expand it if you find yourself needing just a little more room.

The Maxsa Innovations Rooftop Cargo Carrier is the clear choice for those who prioritize raw storage capacity and accessibility above all else. Boasting a generous 17 cubic feet of internal space and a robust 165-pound weight capacity, this box is engineered to handle the heaviest loads typical of family travel. Its exterior dimensions are substantial, measuring approximately 55.12 inches long, 35.04 inches wide, and 16.14 inches high, creating a cavernous interior that dwarfs smaller competitors.
What truly sets this model apart is the dual-side opening design. Most rooftop carriers require you to open from the top or front, forcing you to climb onto the car or contort yourself to reach deep into the box. The Maxsa Innovations model allows you to access the cargo from two sides, which makes packing and unpacking significantly easier. This feature is a game-changer when you are trying to organize gear at a rest stop or load items into a tight parking spot. The secure locking system includes two keys and robust straps, ensuring that your belongings remain safe whether you are parked at a campsite overnight or driving through a busy city.
This carrier is perfect for the family of four or five who needs to transport skis, snowboards, strollers, or a full week's worth of luggage. The 17-cubic-foot capacity means you can leave the trunk completely free for passengers or pets. While the aerodynamic shape is designed to reduce wind noise and improve fuel efficiency, the sheer size of the box means it will still create more drag than a smaller unit. You should buy this if you frequently take long road trips and need to maximize the utility of your vehicle's roof space, accepting the trade-off of slightly reduced fuel economy for the ability to carry everything you need in one go.
• Best for maximum storage volume → Maxsa Innovations Rooftop Cargo Carrier (17 cu ft vs 11 cu ft).
• Best for easy loading from the side → Maxsa Innovations Rooftop Cargo Carrier (dual-side opening vs single top/front opening).
• Best for aerodynamic efficiency → PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier (smaller profile generally reduces drag more effectively).
• Best for shorter trips and minimal gear → PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier, ideal for quick getaways.
• Best for long road trips with families → Maxsa Innovations Rooftop Cargo Carrier, due to its expansive capacity.
• Best for vehicles with tighter clearance → PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier (lower height profile).
• Best for security features → Both offer locking systems, but Maxsa includes two keys and additional robust straps for extra security.
In my opinion, the decision comes down to how you plan to use the roof space. If I were packing for a beach trip with just my partner and a cooler, I would choose the PM PERFORMOTOR because its smaller size keeps the vehicle agile and easier to park. However, for the vast majority of shoppers looking for a reliable, all-purpose solution for family vacations, I recommend the Maxsa Innovations Rooftop Cargo Carrier. The jump from 11 to 17 cubic feet is massive, and the dual-side opening solves a genuine frustration that almost every user faces with standard boxes. That added convenience and volume make it the superior tool for serious travelers, provided your vehicle's roof rails can handle the extra weight and dimensions.
While the Maxsa Innovations model fits most cars and SUVs, its large dimensions (55 inches long) may obstruct visibility on smaller sedans. You must verify your roof rail width and length compatibility before purchasing, whereas the smaller PM PERFORMOTOR model is generally more forgiving on compact vehicles.
The dual-opening mechanism on the Maxsa model does not appear to compromise the weatherproof integrity, as it is designed specifically for waterproof protection during travel.
Both models claim an aerodynamic design to reduce wind resistance and noise. However, physics dictates that the larger surface area of the 17-cubic-foot Maxsa box will create more drag than the 11-cubic-foot PM PERFORMOTOR unit, potentially resulting in a higher fuel consumption rate on long highway drives.
Both carriers include key-based locking systems to secure valuables and ensure lid alignment. The Maxsa Innovations model explicitly mentions including two keys and robust straps, offering a redundant layer of security that might appeal to those traveling in high-risk areas.
