Squanto KIDNAPPED BY CORBITANT

• Squanto has been critical to our survival.

• Squanto was first kidnapped in 1614 by an English fisherman who attempted to sell him as a slave in Spain. With the help of a priest, Squanto found his way to England and back to his home in America in 1619, unfortunately finding his tribe wiped out due to European diseases.

• In 1621, Wampanoag Chief Massasoit instructed Squanto to live with the Pilgrims, due to his understanding of the English language from his time in England. Squanto converted to Christianity.

• Squanto taught the Pilgrims survival skills, crop cultivation and rotation in their new home. Squanto was aided by a second Wampanoag named Hobomok.

• Another sachem (leader) among the Indians was Corbitant, but he was leery of the new neighbors and didn't see the wisdom in helping the Pilgrims survive.

• In August of 1621, Corbitant kidnapped Squanto, Massasoit and Hobomok and intended to execute Squanto. Hobomok escaped, running back to Plymouth with word that Squanto was kidnapped & killed by Corbitant and his men.

DECISION: You hear word that Corbitant has killed Squanto. Squanto has been your friend and truly has preserved the Colony by teaching survival skills. Now, you are unsure if Squanto is dead or alive. If you plan on retaliating against Corbitant, you risk your own life, as well as possible relations with friendly Massasoit. Hobomok has told you that he will be your guide to where Squanto might still be, if he's alive. What should you do?
