For the Pilgrims, Squanto was critical to their survival.
Squanto was kidnapped in 1614 by English who attempted to sell him as a slave in Spain. Once this failed, Squanto found his way to England and back to his home in 1619, unfortunately finding his home wiped out due to European diseases.
In 1621, Wampanoag Chief Massasoit will instruct Squanto to be an assistant for the Pilgrims, due to his understanding of the English language from his time in England.
Squanto taught the Pilgrims survival skills, crop cultivation and rotation in their new home. Squanto was aided by a 2nd Wampanoag, Hobomok.
Another sachem (leader) among the Indians was Corbitant, but he was leery of the new neighbors and didn't see the wisdom in helping the Pilgrims survive.
In August of 1621, Corbitant captured Squanto, Massasoit and Hobomok at Namassakett and intended to execute Squanto. Hobomok fled the scene, running back to Plymouth with word that Squanto was kidnapped & killed by Corbitant and his men.
