What actually happened? A Jury of 17 found the three assassins guilty. The jury was composed of 12 Puritans and 5 converted Indians.Â
The execution of the three Indian assassins sparked the most deadly war per capita in American history: King Philip's War. 1/3 people living in New England were killed in this war.
Chief Metacomet (King Philip) exacted revenge on the Puritans by massacring and burning several of their villages. The Puritans responded by massacring and burning several Indian villages. The war lasted less than a year (1676), and ended when King Philip was assassinated by another Indian who converted to Puritanism.
Metacomet's head was put on a pole at the entrance to Plymouth where it remained for over 20 years.
