Education is the cornerstone of our community, but for many, it’s a personal battleground. I grew up watching a family member struggle to fit into the traditional academic mold—a world where 1+1=2 is the only acceptable answer. This scenario is a reminder that when the system fails to adapt, students are left behind. Today, we face a new turning point: the rise of artificial intelligence.
As AI enters the classroom, we must ask ourselves a vital question: “Is technology informing young minds by opening new pathways, or is it deforming them by replacing human creativity?” For the teachers at Northwestern State University of Louisiana’s Elementary Lab School, the answer lies striking a delicate balance between technology and passion.
Caron Coleman, the school principal of E-Lab, said the integration of AI isn’t about replacing the teachers; it’s about empowering them. She views AI as a high-powered administrative assistant for the business side of education.
“By using AI to handle the heavy lifting of lesson plans and rubric creations, teachers are free to do what they do best: teach,” Coleman explained. “AI acts as a co-pilot for our teachers. It can help them give feedback on a deeper level or create rubrics, but it can never replace the actual thoughts and work of a teacher.”
This philosophy is backed by official federal guidance. The U.S Department of Education advocates for a Human-in-the-Loop framework. This policy warns against “algorithmic automation” and instead insists that AI should only be used to enhance- not replace- the judgment and expertise of professional educators.
By requiring that human eyes remain on everything from rubrics to student work, the E-Lab is following a national blueprint designed to keep the teacher as the ultimate authority in the classroom.
Despite the benefits of AI, Coleman is firm about its educational boundaries. At E-lab, human eyes are a non-negotiable part of the teaching process. She insists that AI must never affect grading. “I would never want it to replace the way they grade students’ work. It is vital that teachers lay their own eyes on what the students produce,” Coleman added.
While she acknowledged that AI’s utility might be better suited for graphic design and used in middle and high schoolers’ learning, she remains cautious. “Used the right way, with clear parameters, AI is beneficial; however, it can also lead to dishonesty, and that's where we have to be very careful,” Coleman said.
Melissa Kaufman, a 4th-grade math teacher, sees AI as a “game changer” for instructional quality. In the past, finding diverse resources to meet specific educational standards required hours of manual research. Now, that process is instantaneous.
“It allows me to bring quality instruction without hours of research. I can type in a standard... and it gives me multiple items to choose from,” Kaufman said.
However, Kaufman doesn’t just copy and paste. She maintains a hands-on approach, editing AI-generated images and items to ensure they meet the necessary students' standards. Beyond the materials, she strives to make using AI accessible. Tools such as speech–to-text and text-to-speech allow for dynamic differentiation, helping students with traditional reading or writing to keep pace with their peers.
Kaufman’s success with these tools aligns with broader research from the Brookings Institution, which identifies AI’s primary benefit in early education as its ability to provide “differentiated instruction” at a scale previously impossible for a single teacher. By tailoring content to individual needs, AI acts as an equalizer for students with learning differences.
Despite these benefits, Kaufman and Coleman share similar concerns regarding “user-dependent” risk. AI is only as good as the person using it. “The negative side of AI would definitely be based on the user,” Kaufman warns. “Sometimes AI enables people with a lack of motivation to just plan lessons and not check the alignments before presenting content to students.”
This caution is mirrored in the global academic community. The Brookings Global Task Force warns of a “cognitive peril,” which is the risk that over-reliance on AI could lead to a decline in independent problem-solving. “I do not let AI grade or plan my lessons, but I do use it for quality images and slides,” Kaufman explained.
Speed is the primary benefit for Larren Procell, a 4th-grade English teacher, but not at the expense of purpose. She finds that AI accelerates the preparation process, which allows her to be more intentional with her classroom time. “My planning can be faster with AI and more intentional; it also helps to differentiate the current lessons I am working on,” Procell said.
The ability to modify a lesson among a diverse learning need of a classroom is a superpower in closing the achievement gap of the modern age of education. Yet, Procell harbors a deep concern about the “thinking gap.”
If a machine provides all the answers, does the student lose the ability to ask questions? Brookings research echoes Procell’s fear that if a machine does the heavy lifting and acts like a crutch, the students may lose the critical thinking “muscles” necessary for future success.
“I feel used correctly, it can be a great asset to educators across the board! At times, I worry it may take away the thinking aspect for students,” Procell said, explaining that guardrails aren’t just for teachers—they are essential to ensure students don’t use AI as a replacement for their own work.
In the art classroom, the conversation shifts from data to soul. Anna Rachel uses AI for logistical tasks, such as creating quick graphics for the school’s Christmas program—tasks that typically take a lot of time for her to do. But when it comes to students' creative output, she draws the line.
There is a fear of AI deforming the very essence of the brain's imagination. “People want still to be able to say, hey, can you paint a real hand-drawn or hand-painted piece instead of using AI,” Rachel said. She worries that if the students rely on a prompt to generate an image, they will lose their creative process. “It does take away some creative aspects of the imagination,” Rachel added.
Currently, E-Lab students have very little direct access to AI in all classrooms, a choice to preserve the authenticity of their work. Rachel remains on “both sides of the fence,” appreciating the efficiency of her own planning while guarding the sanctity of the “hand-painted experience” for her students.
Whether in the principal’s office or in the art room, a clear consensus has emerged at NSU’s E-Lab: AI is a supportive “co-pilot,” never the pilot. The vision focuses on intentional balance that uses technology to navigate the routine and the logistical so that the human connection remains at the destination. This method of how to properly use AI ensures our kids' futures to be creative and brighter than ever. The E-Lab shows love and support for the students and will guide them on how to have a healthy balance of virtual and reality.
