This world is a mash-up of every time period encountered before, the main environment modifier, portals, reflect that. Portals summon special zombies from any time period to the lawn. The tiles where portals appear and the zombies summoned are scripted and never change. The gimmicks from some other worlds are also present, elevating the challenge to the point of being the second world with a five Jalapeno difficulty rating.

Since the player can encounter zombies from every previous world in this world, it can be a good option to complete multiple tasks at the same time from Travel Log that involves killing certain zombies.

However, the player cannot choose plants that do not cost sun (except Hot Potato and Stallia), sun-producing plants and some other certain plants (However, this rarely happens). After choosing, the player will be able to plant plants with instant recharge to set up his or her defense before starting the battle.

Similar to the first game, the player has to make matches of three or more of the same plant so more can appear. Each match gives one sun plus another one for each chain reaction caused. The sun is used to upgrade the plants on the board. If the player manages to make a match of more than four plants, the Plant Food effect of the plant moved is activated. When a set number of matches is reached, the player wins the level.

I have an idea for a reason why this game would continue. Dr. Zomboss could have cursed the waffle taco to send Crazy Dave into an apocalyptic time, or the time line of Plants vs Zombies 1. I want to see first Plants vs Zombies levels appear in Plants vs Zombies 2 with added twists, such as portals appearing and dinosaurs. If they expand Modern Day again and add Night, Fog, Rain, Pool, Roof Day and Roof Night levels, they could spam many zombies per area of the house. This includes their standard, conehead, buckethead, special-level-up head, flag and rally variations.

It takes place in the present day, or rather moments before Crazy Dave eats his taco and yearns to re-experience it again. Modern Day mashes up various zombies and mechanics from the worlds before it, making each level challenging in their own way.
