From 1990 to 2000, a total of 104 five-minute Pingu episodes were made at Trickfilmstudio in Russikon, Switzerland.[1] The episodes were written by Silvio Mazzola, and were directed and animated by Otmar Gutmann using clay animation. A special twenty-five minute episode called "Pingu at the Wedding Party" (also known by its home video title A Very Special Wedding) was produced in 1997.

Regarding episode titles, the main title listed for each episode in series 1-4 originates from BBC television broadcasts and European home video releases. Where applicable, several episodes that were redubbed in the late 1990's additionally have alternative titles that were first introduced on the official Japanese DVD releases, which were subsequently translated for North American audiences. Episode titles for the revival series are taken from the European DVDs.

In the UK, the BBC appears never to have broadcast any of the normal 5-minute episodes from the second half of series 3 or from series 4.[3] However, the unaired series 3 episodes have been featured on BBC produced videos. Of the episodes that have been broadcast, all have been broadcast since 4 September 2006 inclusive. All of the 156 episodes, including Pingu at the Wedding Party have since been released on DVD by HIT Entertainment in the UK.

In 1993, David Hasselhoff released a single titled "Pingu Dance",[13] a rap song (in Switzerland only) based on the Pingu shorts and featuring samples of Penguinese. A portion of this song is used as the theme to Pingu in international airings, and was also heard in the re-dubbed version of the "Pingu Looks After the Egg (retitled Pingu Helps with Incubating)" episode, replacing the "Woodpeckers from Space" song from the original version.

On 29 October 2001, HIT Entertainment bought the rights to the series, including the original 104 episodes and the wedding special, for 15.9 million.[15] HIT later revived the show, and produced a further 52 episodes[16] from 2003 to 2006. These episodes were animated through stop motion like the original, but used resin casts of the original clay puppets, which had deteriorated by this time.

The HIT Entertainment episodes were made by a completely new team at HOT Animation, but co-creator Erika Brueggemann still traveled to the company's headquarters in the United Kingdom to check on production. At the time, she said, "Last year a production company from England bought everything... I traveled to Manchester last summer and met their highly motivated team who worked with great commitment, humor and responsibility towards children. I think Pingu is in good hands now."[6]

Contrary to some sources, there was never any CGI used in these later episodes. When HIT Entertainment bought the rights, Carlo Bonomi was replaced with new voice actors Marcello Magni and David Sant.[17][5] Magni and Sant, Italian and Spanish actors based in London, both have a mime and clowning background and were already aware of the clown language "Grammelot" of which the penguin language was based on.[5]

A Japanese-produced reboot of the series, titled Pingu in the City (Japanese:  in , Hepburn: Ping in za Shiti), was announced in 2017. It premiered on NHK-E on October 7, 2017. Unlike its previous series, it is computer-animated, and features Pingu and his family moving to a big city. Each episode involves Pingu attempting to help out anyone there with their jobs, although he usually messes it up. The series was produced by Polygon Pictures in the same style of the original stop motion series through computer animation.[20] It was directed by Naomi Iwata and written by both Kimiko Ueno and Shigenori Tanabe, with music done by Ken Arai.[21] It features voices by Ryota Iwasaki and Fumiya Tanaka, in a similar style to Carlo Bonomi, David Sant, and Marcello Magni.

In Australia, episodes of Pingu originally aired as a segment on the children's program The Book Place on the Seven Network from 1992 to 1996, and later aired on ABC Television as a standalone program in 1998.

In Canada, Pingu airs on TVOKids, CBC Kids, Knowledge Network, Toon-A-Vision, and YTV. Pingu has been a mainstay of the children's programming blocks on TVOntario since the mid-1990s. It can still be seen on TV in that country since APTN airs The Pingu Show as part of its morning children's programming block "APTN Kids", and the show is available in English and French language versions. Some of the controversial episodes, such as "Pingu Quarrels With His Mother" (also known as "Pingu Argues With His Mother") and "Little Accidents" (also known as "Pingu's Lavatory Story"), have aired uncut on APTN Kids. In British Columbia, Pingu is aired during commercial breaks on Knowledge Network.

Hello, I'm from Australia and I was reminded today of a deep childhood memory from watching a weird Pingu episode. It's NOT "Pingu Dreams", I've rewatched and the creepy walrus isn't the same guy from my memories.

I forget how the episode begins, but part of the plot is that the Pingu family are avoiding either one or multiple leopard seals, I remember specifically that I knew what these looked like and couldn't have mistaken them because of the grey skin and beady black eyes. The family is afraid. They retreat to their house, cowering around a table with their fins over their heads, but their faces swivel up and stare at something above the camera's fov. The shot pans out and up to reveal there is nothing but darkness outside their igloo, and there is a massive seal head looking down on them.

The episode could have ended there, but a part of me believes that the four walls collapsed away like a set and the seal ate them all (in a slurp, no chewing and no blood) before the seal smiles dead at the camera and then it ends.

You guys remember the kids show Pingu, right? Did you know that there are 3 episodes that are officially banned from television? They are Pingu's Dream, Pingu Runs Away, and Little Accidents. This isn't a creepypasta, these episodes actually aired.

Pingu's Dream was the 21st episode of Season 1 and originally aired on May 12, 1990. The episode was banned because of the somewhat creepy music and that the walrus in the episode scared the living hell out of the kids viewing it. Here is the original episode:

Pingu Runs Away was the 14th episode of Season 1 and originally aired on January 12, 1990. The episode was banned due to a scene that shows the mother spanking Pingu and due to some disturbing imagery in the ice like the skull in the above picture. If anybody wants to watch the full episode, here it is:

Little Accidents was the 18th episode of Seaon 1 and aired on April 21, 1990. The episode is also known as Pingu's Lavatory Story. The episode was banned due to alcohol references and scenes of Pingu and his little sister Pinga taking a leak. If anybody wants to actuall see footage of the episode, look up Pingu's Lavatory Story on Youtube or PM me because if I post the video on this topic, I just might get some warning points.

I remember an episode that I havent seen in something like 15 years. Pingu gets a camera and goes on an adventure and takes pictures of everything. But the lens has some cover on it and Pingu does not take it off. So once the pictures are developed they all come back black.

Now, this is where it starts to become interesting. When I was 5, or 6, I saw the beginning of a Pingu episode called "Pingu's Punishment" on TV. I only saw a bit of it, but what I remember was Pingu was very angry, and his mother began smashing plates. I also remember the episode was about Pingu playing outside when he was supposed to be doing chores. My mother came in at the plate smashing part, shut off the TV, and told me that dinner was ready.

I thought this as an adventure to myself, and I contacted trickfilmstudio, the company that made Pingu. I asked to them for a complete production guide of Pingu and they sent it to me via email. I looked at it, compared it to Wikipedia's list, and I noticed something was wrong with the final series. "Pingu Helps Grandfather", which was the 23rd episode of series 4, was missing. At the bottom of the list was an episode titled "Pingu Ending". I asked for a synopsis, but they refused to give me one, stating it was personal information.

The 1st part was the same episode I saw when I was a kid. However, something felt off. The theme song was distorted and instead of Pingu's usual 'Noot Noot', there was backwards audio. I recorded it with SoundRecorder and it played "You can't survive like this beyond death." I found that very creepy but continued with the video.

During the 4th season of Pingu, there was an writer/animator named Ted Goldman. Ted was a quiet man, who usually wasn't that sociable. Sometime during the middle of the season, Ted's mother had been trying to reach something from the upper shelf. The ceiling fan was still on. She got decapitated. Ted was immediately hurt by this. He began submitting morbid ideas, such as Pingu killing all the other characters. He even asked Bonomi to do a voice of Pingu dying. Goldman found out that Pingu was closing production at the end of the season. Ted passed off the episode as the series finale. Right after they had watched the episode, they discovered Ted was being charged with animal cruelty, bestiality, and murder. Ted left an apparent suicide note claiming he was going to live in Antarctica. However no records claim he was ever there and he was last spotted in Santa Barbara, California purchasing a gun. They never found him.

I was left shocked. Then a thought occurred to me to play the entire episode backwards, starting from the part where the distorted voice began. I heard a scream, a shout, and a very eerie voice that said something that still haunts me to this day.

Fast forward to the end of the year. I had gotten to watch all the new Pingu episodes as part of the test audience. Except one: Revenge of The Walrus. I was sick when they showed the episode, and as fate would have it, the episode was canned and never aired. I wanted to see what I had missed, see why they cancelled the episode. e24fc04721
