SLEEP AND NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL HEALTH: WHY IS SLEEP IMPORTANT AND HOW CAN WE IMPROVE IT?
Dr. Diana Pinto
Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Pain Management Clinic, Thane
In the post pandemic era and a day/age when Sleep should be an increasingly necessary commodity, we are facing an epidemic of a different kind in the general population: Sleep deprivation.
Once our sleep drops below seven hours, one can start to measure objective impairments in the brain and in the body. The shorter the sleep, the worse your musculoskeletal system. The shorter the sleep, the shorter your life.
Sleep is important because it can help us physically heal, deal with stress and improve motor skills. A good night's sleep isn't just about how many hours of sleep one gets, but also the quality of that sleep.
As Biomechanists and Physiotherapists, we need to cultivate an understanding of how sleep affects the Musculoskeletal system and what we could do from a Fascial/Nutritional perspective to help improve sleep. This inadvertently will help our clients improve on their Wellness, helping to bring about a better response from the Neuromusculoskeletal system.
