Factors facilitating clinical assessment practice in physiotherapy students - A cross sectional study

Background
Diagnosing patient illness depends on the assessment performed by the clinician. The clinical assessment
is responsible for determining the treatment in any clinical setup. Clinical assessment is component of
clinical practice by which student learn to apply the theory in clinical setup. And such process is
challenging and is performed with barriers.
Objective /Aim
Aim of this study is to determine the factors facilitating and inhibiting patient assessment in physiotherapy
Methodology
A Cross sectional study was conducted among 203 students in Dakshina Kannada and Maharashtra.
During the month of September and October 2021. A questioner was developed for identifying the
factors facilitating clinical assessment and it was validated by departmental staffs of Alva’s college of
physiotherapy. The questionnaire included factors affecting clinical assessment such as Workload, Patient
cooperation, time, Communication, Training /Practice. Institutional review board approval was obtained
to conduct the study and the questionnaire was forwarded to students and data was collected by the
responses provided from postgraduates, interns and final years.
Results
SPSS was used to perform descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. In descriptive statistics, age,
gender and designation their frequency and percentage was calculated. In inferential statistics Chi square
test, linear regression and correlation was calculated,
Conclusion
Factors related to workload are strongly associated with clinical assessment performance. Clinical
examination, performing special test, neurological assessment, pediatrics assessments and OBG
assessments facilitates clinical assessment skill.
