Objective:
To evaluate the literature investigating the effectiveness of myofascial release (MFR) techniques and taping in patients with plantar fasciitis.
Methods/ Design:
A systematic review of all the available studies was done with an emphasis on studies focusing on randomized controlled trials (RCT) and quasi experimental studies. The databases used for searching the articles are PubMed, Google scholar and PEDro. Studies having pain and function as their outcome measures were recruited for the review.
Results:
A total of 11 studies were considered relevant (10 RCT’s and 1 quasi experimental). Out of these, five were on MFR and six on taping in plantar fasciitis. All the five articles indicated a positive impact of MFR in treating plantar fasciitis although one article suggested that further research should be done on the same. Out of six articles for taping, five indicated a positive result of taping in plantar fasciitis. In a few studies, taping was combined with other treatment modalities. One study suggested that taping was not effective in treating plantar fasciitis.
Conclusion:
According to the reviewed articles MFR and Taping are effective tools for treating plantar fasciitis. Although further research should be conducted on the same to study its short-term and long-term effects.
Keywords: myofascial release, taping, plantar fasciitis.
