ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVES:
Since nurses undergo prolonged standing during their work hamstring tightness and gluteus muscle weakness may be common among them. Tightness Tightness in hamstring leads to hamstring injuries, and also the hamstring acts as primary hip extensor to compensate for gluteus maximus weakness. The objective of the study to find the effect of duration of standing on hamstring muscle length and gluteus maximus strength among nurses and also to find the relationship between them with the duration of standing.
METHOD:
The Study was conducted among 140 female nurses of Yenepoya medical college hospital. Data were collected administering the active knee extension method by using goniometer for assessing hamstring muscle length and Hand held dynamometer for the quantitative assessment of gluteus maximus muscle strength.
Result: The results shows that there is a statistically significant effect in correlation between the hamstring muscle length and gluteus muscle strength of right side (p value=0.044). Correlation between the duration of standing and right and left gluteus muscle strength shows a statistical sign significant effect, (p value=0.01and 0.017respectively).
CONCLUSION: This study concludes that the effect of prolonged duration of standing at work showed a significant correlation with hamstring muscle length and gluteus muscle strength among female nurses.
Key words: Hamstring tightness, Active knee extension, Gluteus Maximus weakness.
