Background: According to World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO),
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) can be defined as troublesome symptoms
sufficient to impair an individual’s quality of life, or injury or complications that
result from retrograde flow of esophagus, oropharynx and/or respiratory tract. A
systematic review of longitudinal studies showed that the prevalence of GERD has
increased during the past recent decades. If this trend continues, it could contribute to
the rapidly increasing incidence of more serious complications associated with
GERD, affecting the patient's quality of life. Previous studies revealed that college
students represent a vulnerable population that has a higher risk of GERD compared
to general population.
Aim and Objective: To study the Effects of Breathing training and Shaker’s exercise
along with Kinesio Taping in subjects with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
(GERD).
Methodology: The study design was a Pre and Post test Experimental design. 20
subjects who fulfilled the predetermined inclusion criteria were selected and divided
into 2 groups by simple random sampling method. Each group consisted of 10
patients. One of the group received Breathing training, Shaker’s exercise, Kinesio
taping along with Conventional management and the other group received breathing
training, shaker’s exercise alone along with conventional management. The study was
conducted over a period of 6 months. A total of 25-30 minutes, 1 session/ day, 5
times/ week over a period of 6 weeks. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Questionnaire (GerdQ) was considered as the outcome measure. Paired ‘t’ test was
used to assess the difference within the group. Unpaired ‘t’ test was used to compare
the post-test values between the group.
Results: There was a significant difference between the pre and post-therapy scores
when evaluated with Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire (GERD-Q). A
statistically significant improvement was obtained in the group which received
breathing training, Shaker’s exercise and kinesio taping along with conventional
management for GERD ( Unpaired ‘t’ test-t = -2.55377, ‘p’ value is 0.009971)
Conclusion: Both the groups showed significant improvement but the group which
received breathing training, Shaker’s exercise and kinesio taping showed better
improvement when compared to the other group which received breathing training
and shaker’s exercise alone, according to the results of the Gastroesophageal Reflux
Disease Questionnaire (GERD-Q) scores.
