A brief history of the department:-

The department of physics of Kokrajhar Govt. College was established in the year 1964 under the headship of Lt. Prof. Bimal Ranjan Ghosh. At the beginning Higher Secondary Science course, subsequently B.Sc. with pass course in Physics were introduced. In the year 1994, the department opened Major course in physics for B.Sc. students under the affiliation of Gauhati University. 

From the beginning the Physics department contributed significantly in educating and giving its alumnus successful careers in various field such as Teaching, Banking sector, Railways, Life insurance and many other. Apart from that, in the year 1964, there were very few degree colleges in the undivided Goalpara district of Assam which imparted quality science education. Therefore the department Physics with other two faculty members Lt. Prof. D.L. Mukherjee and Lt. Prof. P.K. Roy continue their mission.

In early 90’s and mid 90’s, department got two more faculty members Lt. Prof. Aroti Bora and Mrs. Anjalee Basumatary, they continue the legacy of the department too. 

In the 21st century beginning the department also introduced lot of student centric activities such as departmental seminar for students, organizing special lectures as per the demand of time. 

At present physics department has seven faculty members and one bearer (one post is vacant). In the current academic session, the department has got the permission to open PG course in Physics under the affiliation of Bodoland University. This very fact reiterates the quality and success story of the department. 

Departmental Facilities:

The department currently has six numbers of well equipped laboratories.

    I. Computer Laboratory: A dedicated computer lab was established in the year 2019 under the aegis of RUSA, which comprise of 16 desktop computers and one LCD projector. This lab is essential for the students of Physics (Major/Honours) to complete their practical requirements as per the prescribed syllabus of the University.

    II. Electronics/Solid State Laboratory: The department has one well equipped electronics/Solid State lab, with power stabilizer. This lab is sufficient to carry out the required number of practical for honours and pass course as per the affiliating University norms.

    III. Higher Secondary Laboratory: It catches the need of 10+2 students for their practical and related activities. 

    IV. Dark Room: This room is specially arranged for doing the practical of spectrometers, bi-prisms etc.

    V. Semi Dark Room: For doing certain practical, the department needs some arrangement which is not completely dark. The semi dark room fulfills the need of the same.

    VI. General Degree Laboratory: This laboratory is rigorously used by the students of B.Sc. 1st and 2nd semester both Major and Pass course students.

The other facilities includes departmental class rooms, in at least three laboratories, the Major classes of late PG classes of Physics class are taken. 

The department of Physics has a very active department library, where the students and teachers of the department have the facility to borrow books and return after seven days. The reissue of the same is also available. The department has a reading corner, where students can use it optimally for their library class as well as mentorship from teachers. Besides the department have question bank facilities as well.
