I am learning how to shoot using window natural light for baby/ kids portrait. I read few articles about this. A lot of them are mentioning the best natural light comes from northern window facing and some articles mentioned that the northern window facing is applicable in the northern hemisphere (ie. USA, Europe) and for us in southern hemisphere the best would be using the natural light that comes from windows that is facing the south. Can you please confirm? My northern facing window here is where the sunshine comes directly from the windows and has shadows (shadows keep on changing depending the time of the day) whilst my south facing window is where the natural light is always there throughout the day and does not seems to have strong shadow coming into the room. My understanding from reading the articles that it would be best using the south facing windows. Am I correct? But I found we need to use higher ISO setting in the south facing window because the light is not as strong as the one facing the north. Please advise.

Currently at my house (in the northern hemisphere) its a very overcast day @ 7:45am. Light coming from ether north or southern facing windows is almost the same (if not exactly the same) color and intensity.

However if it were a clear cloudless day at noon in the middle of winter my southern windows might be getting direct sunlight while my northern windows would be lit by indirect sunlight. In this case the northern windows would give me 'soft light' and the southern windows 'hard light'.

Hai, well I'am not an experienced one to say all about this. But I think my tips can help you taking better photos using the natural light. Whether you are living in the northern or southern hemisphere, the season also matters. South facing windows are helpful for letting the natural light maximum during the winter season, as the day time is comparatively less. Whereas the north facing windows allow moderate amount of sunlight without any glare and much heat during the summer days.
