The contest is judged by season: winter, spring, summer, and fall. First, second, and third place winners are selected for each seasonal category. A grand prize winner is selected from that group. 


We judge with a panel of department staff, which includes photography experts as well as people with expertise in all things DNR. Last year we had a seven-judge panel that included wildlife, insects/flora, parks, fisheries, communications, and photography experts. Our judges volunteer their time to choose the best of thousands of amazing photos in a days-long process of ranking and discussing submitted photographs.

Direct light is the kind seen falling across the floor that creates a hard line. It will make it very difficult to expose the image properly because you must choose between the portions of the photo that are very bright and the portions of the photo that are very dark. I have light brown hardwood floors, and the direct light coming off of them adds a yellow tone to everything I photograph. Direct light reflects off the ground and illuminates your subject from the bottom-up, which looks unnatural and sometimes can even make your subject look a bit creepy! Bounced light is the light that comes in a window after bouncing off of light surfaces. Most of the time, photographers prefer bounced light.

When considering the areas in a space that might act as good staging areas for photographs, think about what direction the window faces, what nearby structures might be blocking it, and the type of lighting you want in your image. This is the starting point that will help you determine the ideal shooting time on a sunny day.

As the sun makes its way down the sky, the area in front of my window is covered in direct light. The tone of the room is very warm because of the color of my floors and rug. Late afternoon is my least favorite time to take photos in this area of the house.

Once the sun dips below our backyard fence, the direct light disappears and it becomes my favorite time of day to photograph by this window. The light is warm and soft, and when I photograph my children playing on the floor it looks like the sunshine is kissing the top of their heads.

The beauty of photography is that there is no one right way to do things. Learn how the light falls throughout the day in a given room and then have fun playing with the different looks direct and bounced light can create in that space.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has announced the winners of the 20th annual Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest, with the grand prize going to Dallin Johnson of Huntingtown for his photo of a gray tree frog.

Backlight photography involves positioning yourself and the subject against the main light source. This means you are facing the sun in that position, while the subject is in front of the light source.

This is the best way to control your exposure, to avoid overexposing. As well, the f-stop you choose dictates what your backlight will look like. With a wide aperture, your light will be dreamy and soft. Alternatively, with a narrow aperture, you can achieve a starburst flare.

Make sure you place your subject in the shade, just outside of the sun. Here, you can still easily expose for your subject, as well as early pop your subject off the background. It will also help out with some nice dimensional lighting, and bokeh too.

Then, with the sun still pretty strong, I chose to obscure the backlight. In this case, through the trees. Adding the trees helps to cut the full force of the sun shining in, instead just letting in peek in, more gently.

With regards to backlighting, I like to meter off the subject, and then drop to down 1 or two stops. I make sure to underexpose a little, mostly to avoid too much haze, and to not blow out any highlights. That way the subject is still well lit, but the background is rich.

If you need help properly exposing your subject, you can always incorporate a reflector. They can really help to get that subject to pop, without overexposing your backlight, I highly recommend trying it.

That way I could still have my exposure low enough to get the silhouette, rich light, but still get her in focus. Shooting a narrower f-stop would result in bumping your ISO. I prefer shooting wide open, so I can avoid ISOs, when possible.

I am always on the lookout for new and interesting places to take pictures. I am especially drawn to locations with beautiful scenery and great natural lighting. When I find such a spot, I like to have the couple focus on each other and forget about the camera.

If a guy is standing naturally with his partner and is insanely in love with them, do you think his hand would be in his pocket? Nope- his hands would be on his partner! The more connection there is with the hands and bodies, the more emotional the photos will be. :)

As a professional photographer, one of the things I always make sure to do is compliment my couples during their photo session. I want them to feel confident and comfortable, and telling them that they look amazing is a great way to do that. I also let them know that the photos are going to be awesome and that they did a great job. This always makes them feel good about themselves and the photos, and it really shows in the final product.

When the session is over, I always tell them again how incredible they were and how excited I am for them to see the photos. This is just one of the many ways I make sure my couples have an amazing experience during their photo session.

Another key indicator for me that a photographer is a true professional is whether they require me to sign a contract. Newborn photography is a professional service, and I would be wary of any photographer who operated their business without a contract. A contract provides a clear and detailed overview of what your investment includes and when your images will be delivered. It is general practice for photographers to collect their session payment in full either before or on the session date, and having a contract sets clear expectations for when your photographer will complete your editing and deliver your final images. I have a better experience working with photographers who provide a clear contract because my investment is protected, I know exactly what to expect throughout the process, and I can relax and enjoy the experience.
