How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want one wired headset that works across nearly every gaming platform you own, choose PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset; if you need headphones built specifically to deepen the audio on a Meta Quest 2 or Quest 3, choose sarlar VR Gaming Headphones.
These two get compared a lot because both are wired, both are over-ear, and both promise more immersion. But they solve different problems. One is a broad multi-platform gaming headset. The other is a VR-first accessory designed around a single ecosystem. Here is how I'd sort them out.
• PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset — biggest strength: 3.5mm compatibility across PS5, PS4, Switch, PC, Xbox, laptops, iOS and phones, plus a braided tangle-free cable and a built-in noise-cancelling mic with a volume wheel.
• PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset — biggest trade-off: it has no mute button and no lighting, its volume wheel sits below the ear cups, and PHOINIKAS itself notes the fit suits smaller head circumferences better.
• sarlar VR Gaming Headphones — biggest strength: audio and cabling tuned for the Oculus/Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3, with 45mm drivers, enlarged protein ear pads for noise isolation, and a bundle of VR accessories.
• sarlar VR Gaming Headphones — biggest trade-off: it's a VR accessory, not a general-purpose headset — no mic, no console/PC focus, and it leans on the Quest for its whole reason to exist.
• Pick PHOINIKAS if you game on consoles, PC and mobile and want one wired headset plus a mic for voice chat.
• Pick sarlar if your main rig is a Quest 2 or Quest 3 and you want to block outside noise and upgrade the built-in audio.
The PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset is a classic wired, over-ear gaming headset built around a 3.5mm jack. Inside are 40mm dynamic drivers with a 20 Hz–20,000 Hz frequency range and 32 ohm impedance, which is the kind of easy-to-drive spec that plays nicely with controllers, laptops and phones without needing a separate amp. PHOINIKAS describes the tuning as stereo/bass surround with precise acoustic positioning, so the pitch here is a wide, immersive soundstage for games rather than studio-flat listening.
It also does voice chat, which the sarlar simply doesn't. There's a noise-cancelling mic and a volume wheel located below the ear cups. Two honest caveats from the spec sheet: there's no separate mute button, and there's no light on this headset — so if RGB and one-tap muting matter to you, look elsewhere. PHOINIKAS also notes the head-fitting design suits gamers with smaller head circumferences better.
Buy it if you want one affordable-feeling, do-everything wired headset for consoles, PC and mobile with a mic for party chat. Skip it if you're a headphone-only VR user, you need a dedicated mute button, or you have a larger head and want a looser fit.
sarlar VR Gaming Headphones: Who It's For
The sarlar VR Gaming Headphones are a purpose-built accessory for the Oculus Quest 2 and Quest 3. Everything about them points at that one job. The 3.5mm cable is custom-length specifically for the Quest 2 and Quest 3, which matters more than it sounds — VR headphone cables that are too long snag on your arms and controllers, and a fitted length keeps things tidy and low-latency while you move.
The audio hardware is the headline: 45mm large-aperture drivers, which are bigger than the 40mm units in the PHOINIKAS. Bigger drivers generally move more air and can give a fuller low end, and sarlar pairs them with enlarged protein ear pads for noise isolation and a lightweight fuselage with a protein headband for longer sessions. The pitch is straightforward — block the outside world, keep the weight down, and let the VR audio pull you in.
The bundle is where sarlar clearly positions this as a kit rather than a lone pair of headphones: an extended headphone cable, a VR lens protect cover, a Velcro tie, a microfiber cleaning cloth and a headphone carrying case. If you've just bought a Quest, that's a sensible starter set of the small stuff people forget.
The trade-offs are equally clear. This is not a multi-platform headset. There's no mic, so it won't help you talk to teammates in a multiplayer game, and its compatibility is framed around the Quest ecosystem rather than PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or PC. It's also a wired 3.5mm product, so it depends on your Quest's headphone jack. And frankly, if you don't own a Quest 2 or Quest 3, this product has almost nothing to offer you.
Buy it if your main gaming device is a Meta Quest 2 or Quest 3 and you want better audio, quieter immersion and a tidy cable. Skip it if you need a mic, you game mostly on consoles or PC, or you don't own a Quest.
• Best for multi-platform gaming → PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset. PS5, PS4, Switch, PC, Xbox, laptops, iOS and phones on one 3.5mm connection.
• Best for VR immersion → sarlar VR Gaming Headphones. Custom-length cable and noise-isolating ear pads built around the Quest 2 and Quest 3.
• Best for voice chat → PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset. It has a noise-cancelling mic; the sarlar has none.
• Best for blocking outside noise → sarlar VR Gaming Headphones. Enlarged protein ear pads are designed for isolation; PHOINIKAS leans on breathable materials and sound isolation instead.
• Best for cable management in VR → sarlar VR Gaming Headphones. The custom-length cable is the whole point of the design.
• Best for accessories in the box → sarlar VR Gaming Headphones. Extended cable, lens cover, Velcro tie, cleaning cloth and a carrying case.
• Best for a bigger driver → sarlar VR Gaming Headphones. 45mm drivers versus the 40mm units in the PHOINIKAS.
• Best for smaller heads and a lighter, simpler setup → PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset, though note its fit is described as better for smaller head circumferences.
In my opinion, the right pick comes down to your main machine, not the spec sheet. If you bounce between a console, a PC and your phone, I'd buy the PHOINIKAS Gaming Headset — the broad 3.5mm compatibility and the built-in mic make it the more useful single purchase for most people, and the missing mute button and lack of lighting are easy to live with. If your gaming life is a Quest 2 or Quest 3, I'd buy the sarlar VR Gaming Headphones instead, because the custom cable, bigger drivers and noise-isolating pads are aimed exactly at that experience. Nobody needs both unless they own a Quest and a console.
Not universally — they're built for different jobs. PHOINIKAS wins on platform compatibility and voice chat, while sarlar wins on VR-specific audio, noise isolation and included accessories. Match it to your main device.
It's designed around the Oculus Quest 2 and Quest 3, with a custom-length cable for those headsets. It has no mic and isn't positioned as a console or PC gaming headset, so I wouldn't buy it for PlayStation or Xbox use.
The sarlar VR Gaming Headphones, on paper. Its enlarged protein ear pads are explicitly built for complete noise isolation. The PHOINIKAS uses breathable materials for sound insulation and comfort rather than deep passive isolation.
