Wissahickon Valley Park

Wissahickon Valley Park is in Northwest Philadelphia just east of downtown. Wissahickon is among the most scenic and natural places in all of Pennsylvania. It is also home to a popular summer recreation destination for residents and tourists alike. With the beautiful Lackawah Country Club golf course and beautiful rolling hills surrounding it, Wissahickon Valley Park is the perfect place for families to enjoy their recreation.

The park is managed by the City of Wissahickon and was originally constructed as a recreation area in 1857. Wissahickon Valley Park is considered an outdoor park so people may enjoy all types of recreational activities. Camping is one of the most popular activities at Wissahickon Valley Park because of the beautiful scenery, peaceful environment, and wonderful hiking trails. Another popular activity at the park is a picnic. The park utilizes a number of great picnic spots that are within walking distance, or that are close to beautiful overlooks. There are also a couple of unique campsites at the park that provide easy access to hiking and biking trails.

Wissahickon Valley Park is divided into two parts, Schuylkill Creek Park and Friesen Park. The majority of the park is located on the Schuylkill River with some portions located on Chestnut Hill. The majority of the park is made up of a flat landscape. Some of the features include wooded areas, picnic areas, nature trails, a nature center, a pond, several different parks that serve different functions such as an athletic complex, an outdoor pool, a playground, a swimming hole, and a lake. All of these locations have a unique history, and each offers its own unique beauty and charm.

Most of Wissahickon's recreation centers are located on the Schuylkill River or close by. Many of these recreation centers also offer canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and biking. The Chestnut Hill/Wissahuck loop has been specially designed with hiking and biking in mind. Camping is available at various campgrounds throughout Wissahickon Valley Park.

Philadelphia residents have enjoyed years of enjoyment thanks to the various Philadelphia recreation parks. Two of these parks are open to the public year-round. The Philadelphia Parks Conservatory provides a large indoor venue for seasonal outdoor concerts, festivals, and sports events. Several events have been held at the Philadelphia Parks Conservatory such as concerts by The Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Bluegrass Festival. The Wissahickon Creek Park System offers a number of recreational opportunities, one of which is the Wissahickon Trail which links up to two parks.

This section of the park has hiking, mountain biking, and walking trails. The Wissahickon Falls State Park has picnic tables, playground equipment, and numerous features such as waterfall trails, nature trails, and kayaking/canoeing. Other attractions in the Wissahickon Valley Park System include The Adventure Company which has been known to host several entertainment shows at the Wissahickon Falls Park. Another company, Waterfront Secrets, has been known to feature adventure activities such as kayaking and canoeing along the Wissahickon Creek and its waterfalls.

One of the most popular Philadelphia recreational areas is Wissahickon Valley Park, a section of Philadelphia's beautiful Wissahickon Valley. Wissahickon is a historic French-style country estate that was originally built in 1870 by Adolphus Louis Panzarella. The mansion was designed with beautiful tree-covered trellises, and even has four public swimming pools, two of which (The Pool House and The French House) are open to the public. Other popular features of Wissahickon Valley Park are several hiking trails, a nature path, a pavilion, and the Wissahickon Falls, a tourist attraction that's located just across the creek from the park.

Houston's Wissahickon Park is another great destination for families. This section of Houston is known for its wooded natural areas, with more than seventy miles of nature trails, numerous nature centers, as well as a state park. There are two parks in Wissahickon - The Park District A and The Park District B, which house numerous attractions. These include the Wissahickon Falls State Park, located north of downtown Houston, and the playground at the Woodlands Park District A. The playground has tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic tables, and pavilions. The Houston playgrounds along the Gulf Coast have been built by professional architects, and offer a great variety of activities for kids and adults.
