If you want a premium, over-ear experience with hybrid active noise canceling and Hi-Res Audio certification for immersive listening in class or at home, choose Philips H9505; if you need an ultra-lightweight, neck-hanging design with exceptional standby time and hands-free call clarity on the go, choose Qiilu Sx991.
• Philips H9505: Offers deep bass, hybrid ANC, and 27 hours of continuous playback, but is heavier and bulkier due to its over-ear build. Best for students who prioritize audio fidelity and noise isolation during long study sessions.
• Qiilu Sx991: Features a telescopic neck-band design, CVC noise reduction for calls, and a massive 300-hour standby time, though it lacks active noise canceling and has shorter playtime. Best for active users who need portability and reliable battery life between charges.
• The Verdict: The Philips wins on sound quality and immersion, while the Qiilu wins on convenience and battery endurance.
The Philips H9505 is built for the student who treats their headphones as a primary tool for focus. This is not a pair of earbuds you shove in your pocket; it is a substantial, over-ear device designed to seal out the world. The key differentiator here is the Hybrid Active Noise Canceling system. By combining one external microphone with one internal mic, the headphones actively filter out ambient sounds before they reach your ears. For a classroom setting where chatter, hallway noise, or HVAC hums can break concentration, this feature is transformative. You don't just turn up the music to drown out the noise; the technology works to remove the distraction entirely.
Sound quality is another major pillar for this model. With fully integrated Google Assistant support and Hi-Res Audio certification, these headphones are engineered to reproduce music exactly as the artist intended. The 40 mm drivers deliver a specific sonic profile: deep bass, balanced midrange, and sparkling highs. If you listen to lectures recorded with high-fidelity equipment or enjoy streaming albums on your laptop, the difference is noticeable. The inclusion of the Philips Headphones app adds another layer of utility, allowing you to manually adjust bass and treble levels or switch between preset ANC modes with a single tap. This level of customization means you aren't stuck with a generic sound signature; you can tune the audio to match your preference or the environment.

Comfort is critical when wearing headphones for four or five hours straight during exam prep. The H9505 addresses this with memory foam ear-cup cushions and a padded headband. The rounded over-ear design creates a passive seal that further isolates noise, which complements the active cancellation. Touch controls on the right ear cup make it easy to manage calls, music, and ANC without fumbling for buttons. However, the trade-off is weight and size. At 16 ounces, this is a heavy piece of gear compared to true wireless earbuds. The ear cups fold flat for storage, but they still require a carrying case. If you are looking for the best anc wireless headset for school where you need to block out distractions completely, this is the choice. But if you need something that fits easily into a small backpack pocket or doesn't add significant weight to your neck, you might find this design too cumbersome for all-day wear.
The Qiilu Sx991 serves a completely different user profile: the student who needs reliability, portability, and a design that disappears when not in use. Instead of bulky ear cups, this unit utilizes a hanging neck design with unique telescopic earbuds. When you aren't listening, you simply fold them together, making the entire unit compact enough to tuck into almost any bag or even a large pocket. This form factor is ideal for someone who moves constantly between classes, the library, and the gym, and doesn't want to worry about knocking off large over-ear headphones.
Battery performance is where the Qiilu truly shines. While many modern headphones struggle to maintain power throughout a long day, the Sx991 boasts a staggering 300-hour standby time. Even with active use, you get at least 16 hours of playing time and 18 hours of talk time. The charging process takes about 3.5 hours, which is reasonable given the capacity. For a student who often forgets to charge their devices overnight, the sheer longevity of the standby mode provides peace of mind. You can leave them on your desk for days without worrying about them dying. Furthermore, the British CSR 5.0 Bluetooth chip ensures stable connectivity and supports multipoint connection, meaning you can link your phone and laptop simultaneously. This is crucial for multitasking, such as receiving a notification on your phone while streaming a lecture on your computer.
Call quality is another area where the Qiilu focuses its engineering efforts. It employs CVC wideband noise reduction technology specifically to ensure your voice comes through clearly even in noisy environments. If you frequently take calls from professors or group chats while walking across campus or sitting in a busy cafeteria, this feature prevents the background chaos from ruining the conversation. The control method relies on push buttons and voice commands rather than touch-sensitive surfaces, which can be more intuitive when you are wearing gloves or have wet hands. However, the trade-off is the lack of true silence. Without active noise canceling, you will hear the world around you. If you need volume limiting in ear earbuds for school to protect your hearing while blocking out distractions, you must rely solely on the physical fit and volume control, as there is no electronic barrier against external noise.

After weighing the specifications and considering the specific needs of a student, I would buy the Philips H9505. While the Qiilu Sx991 offers incredible battery life and a clever folding design, the educational environment demands focus above all else. The ability to completely shut out the noise of a busy dorm or lecture hall with the H9505's hybrid ANC is a game-changer for productivity. The superior sound quality also ensures that audio content, whether it's language learning podcasts or music for relaxation, is experienced as intended. In my opinion, the extra weight and bulk are a fair trade-off for the immersion and acoustic performance that directly supports academic success. For school, where concentration is the currency, the Philips is the smarter investment.
Yes, the Philips H9505 is excellent for this because its Hybrid Active Noise Canceling actively filters out background chatter and environmental noise, creating a quiet zone for focus. The Qiilu Sx991 does not have active cancellation, so it relies only on the physical seal of the earbuds.
The Philips H9505 offers up to 27 hours of playtime with ANC enabled or disabled, while the Qiilu Sx991 provides at least 16 hours of playing time and 18 hours of talk time. However, the Qiilu has a much longer 300-hour standby time if you aren't using them daily.
Yes, both models support multipoint Bluetooth connections. You can stay connected to two devices simultaneously, allowing you to receive calls on your phone while streaming audio from your laptop without needing to disconnect and reconnect.
The Philips H9505 allows for better hearing protection because its active noise canceling lets you listen at lower volumes while still blocking out distractions. The Qiilu Sx991 requires higher volumes to overcome ambient noise since it lacks active cancellation, which could strain hearing over time.
