Dr. Kollath is a disease ecologist interested in how environmental factors influence the spread and transmission of pathogens. In the Fraser/Herckes group, Dr. Kollath will be examining the aerosol transmission of the fungal pathogen Coccidioides posadasii (The causative agent of Valley fever). This includes the seasonal patterns of transmission of the pathogen and the ecological and environmental variables that effect the spread. Dr. Kollath, along with other collaborators at ASU, also are developing a novel environmental rapid detection assay for Valley fever using aerosolized VOCs. The knowledge gained from the Valley fever study can be applied to other pathogen systems in order to understand environmental transmission.
