A PhD informal study group going over the basics of popular topics in statistical machine learning, led by someone with experience in the area.
Why?
With machine learning being such a rapidly developing field, we realised that many PhD students often haven’t studied a lot of popular topics, which prevents them from fully engaging in talks, conferences, departmental seminars, and more. PhD Espresso aims to bridge this gap by introducing the core concepts and intuition behind these key topics, helping you engage with research beyond your immediate area of expertise. It’s a series of short, stimulating crash talks on interesting subjects, given by Maths PhD students for Maths PhD students.
Session Goals
Understand:
The fundamental problem the method addresses
The framework it operates within and the intuition behind it
Be aware of:
Two key applications or benefits
Two major limitations, pitfalls, or challenges
A few key researchers in the field, both early pioneers and current leaders, so you know whose talks to attend at future conferences.
Beyond the Sessions
Our goal is also to use this platform to promote opportunities for PhD students, including travel grants, fellowships, and other resources. We plan to maintain a PhD calendar with major conference deadlines, application dates, and useful funding opportunities to help you stay informed.
This initiative is from PhD students at the Departments of Mathematics at Imperial College London. It was started by Ella Orme and Guiomar Pescador in February 2025.
Head to Meetings tab to learn about our next and past meetings. The sessions are held at Imperial College London South Kensington Campus. We aim to do a bi-weekly session however, we adapt the calendar to conferences/journal deadlines i.e. to the PhD timetable.
For more information or if you would like to get involved, feel free to reach out to Ella Orme or Guiomar Pescador.
