Somewhere in the universe is a Kzinti ship that is moving through space. Inside the bridge, one of the crew tells the captain that they spotted a ship through the scanners. The captain is quite eager because the Kzinti love to cause trouble and of course the taste of fresh meat. The captain orders the ship to get closer to see the other ship that looks like a 22nd century Daedalus-class starship and seems to have some kind of growth on parts of it. The captain being disappointed orders to target the old ship and fire. The growth on the old ship seems to absorb the energy of the blast and parts of it starts to glow green while it starts to move toward the Kzinti ship.
<Kzinti Captain (yells) – Keep firing at that piece of junk! Do not stop!>
A day later the Enterprise enters the scene. They end up finding the now damaged Kzinti ship that’s floating in space.
<Arex – It looks like a Kzinti ship, sir.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Scanners show that there is at least one life reading inside the craft.>
<Captain Decker – I suppose we should check it out.>
The Enterprise gets closer to the Kzinti ship.
<M’Ress (a little displeased) – I was hoping that I would never meet a Kzinti.>
<Captain Decker – I’m pretty sure a lot of people would want that.>
<M’Ress – That’s true, sir, but they don’t share an origin with them like my kind does. Caitians were descended from an ancient Kzinti colony where my ancestors decided to learn how to control their dark impulses which today we call the taming which had changed us as you can see, while the Kzinti like to call us “traitorkind” and would like even more to slaughter us.>
The Enterprise gets close enough to beam a rescue party aboard. The rescue party sees nothing but dead Kzinti but find one live but unconscious one who seems to be like an ensign.
<One of the rescue party (talking into his wrist communicator) – Enterprise? We found the source of that life reading and will need medical attention.>
<M’Ress (not seen and heard from wrist communicator) – Understood.>
Back in the bridge.
<M’Ress (serious) – Captain? Pardon, but what we have here is a Kzinti who lost in battle and is still alive which will be considered an absolute insult to him and he will see revenge as more important then even his own life and will go through anyone who gets in his way.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Lieutenant M’Ress is quite correct and I suggest that he be sedated while receiving treatment and afterwards sent to a holding cell for the safety of the crew.>
The rescue team and the unconscious Kzinti are beamed aboard and sent to the sickbay where he’s sedated while Doctor Cronkov treats him.
< Doctor Cronkov (serious and a little worried) – Let’s make this as quickly as possible because I don’t know how long the sedative will work for a Kzinti.>
The unconscious Kzinti is in a holding cell. Once he wakes up he savagely attacks the ones closest to him which is Captain Decker and Xon! He gets “electrocuted” but last for 5 seconds as he fights it and tries to get through but fails as he falls.
<Captain Decker – Well, I’m glad I listen to you and M’Ress.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Apparently it was a wise decision.>
<Captain Decker – Now that you got that out of your system, you mind explaining who attacked you?>
<Kzinti prisoner (angry) – I rather rip you apart with my claws, veggie eater!>
Captain Decker and Xon talk in private.
<Captain Decker – To be honest I wasn’t expecting us to be best friends.>
<Xon (disciplined) – One of the members of the rescue team gathered some data from the Kzinti ship’s computers but was somewhat damaged. By now our computers should already made the necessary repairs that may give us a clue on what happened.>
Before the two leave.
<Kzinti prisoner (a little amused) – That ship is a weapon possessed by it’s long dead owners.... and will be the end of you.>
<Xon (disciplined) – It is a superstitious belief that some of the Kzinti have.>
Captain Decker and Xon go to the meeting room to use the view-screen to review the data. They see an image of the Daedalus-class ship.
<Captain Decker (intrigued) – Isn't that a Daedalus-class ship?>
<Xon (disciplined) – The first class of starships that were adopted by the newly formed United Federation of Planets in 2161, but what is peculiar is that the Kzinti had lost despite their superior technology. Logically the battle should have been one-sided with them having the victory.>
<Captain Decker (curious) – Ok, but what’s the gunk on it where parts of it started to glow when they attacked it?>
<Xon (disciplined) -records of their scans say unknown while we can use it to track it down when it comes to energy readings.>
Later, the Enterprise finds the Daedalus-class ship and it’s dormant again. Arex and Tar-rak beam aboard and are in space suits that are made for their bodies.
<Tar-rak – So this is your first time doing stuff outside the ship?>
<Arex – Yeah, expect for that time when I was kidnapped and shrunk to little size. Thought I start building by exploration cred.>
<Tar-rak – The first rule when exploring the unknown is throw away the manual because you can be sure the unknown didn’t read that manual. Always expect crazy to happen.>
The two finally reach the somewhat wrecked Daedalus-class bridge.
<Arax (impressed) – Wow. I would of loved to have driven one of these.>
<Tar-rak (talking through his space suit’s communicator) – Enterprise? We’re on the bridge and so far we haven’t seen any remains of the crew. Either they luckily managed to escape a long time ago and we don’t know about it or something happened to the bodies.>
<Captain Decker (not seen and from communicator) – Understood. By the way, Doctor Cronkov has requested a sample of that gunk that covers the ship to analyze. Also a reminder, do not use the phasers in there in case it energizes that stuff.>
<Tar-rak (talking through his space suit’s communicator) – Got it. I just hope this doesn’t turn out to be like those horror movies you humans used to make.>
Arex takes a sample of the gunk and puts it in a tube while Tar-rak plugs into the console to extact what data there is.
<Arex – So you’re also getting that eerie feeling as well?>
<Tar-rak – Oh’ yeah. I feel like we’re in a slaughterhouse and I’m big enough to admit it gives me the creeps.>
The two are about to leave the bridge.
<Arex – I want to get some readings with the tricorder in the engine room to see if this gunk is what is made this ship move.>
They are now in the Daedalus-class engine room.
<Tar-rak (a little excited) – Man, I love the classics!>
<Arex (enjoying) – Yeah, it does have it’s own unique style to it.>
Arex starts using the tricorder to get some readings. For some reason the gunk there reacts to the scanning as parts of start glowing green. The two notices this.
<Tar-rak (talking through his space suit’s communicator and direct) – Enterprise?! We need a quick getaway!!>
Back on the bridge.
<Captain Decker (direct) – Teleporter room! Get them out of there!>
In the teleporter room they managed to get Tar-rak and Arex!
<Teleporter operator (talking into communicator) – Bridge? We have them.>
Back on the bridge.
<Xon (disciplined) – Luckily we acted when we did now that the ship’s strange energy levels are up.>
<Captain Decker – I’m going to take what happen to the Kzinti ship as a warning and I want us to warp out of here until we know what we’re dealing with.>
The Enterprise jumps into warp and the ghost ship follows. In Arex’s place, who’s in decontamination, is another navigator.
<Navigator – Sir? The “ghost ship” is catching up.>
<Captain Decker (serious) – Go to maximum warp!>
The Enterprise goes faster and gets away from the ghost ship, but then the ghost ship also goes faster and is somehow catching up!
<Navigator (surprised) – Sir?!>
<Captain Decker (in disbelief) – How is that possible?! The Daedalus-class could only go at warp 6!>
<Xon (disciplined and looking at his instruments) – Perhaps the substance that is on it augments it’s capabilities.>
<Captain Decker (annoyed) – Blast it! We’re going to have to fight!>
The Enterprise comes out of warp and so does the ghost ship. The Kzinti prisoner is laughing as if he knows what’s going on. The Enterprise and ghost ship face each other. The front of the ghost ship is shown and it moves like the Reliant in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan that made you think of a predator. The Enterprise fires it’s phaser at the ghost ship while the “gunk” absorbs the energy.
<Xon (disciplined and looking at his instruments) – I am afraid our weapons only make it stronger.>
The ghost ship heads towards the Enterprise and Decker tells everyone to embrace for impact while the red alert is heard! The ensign, an Indian lady, who works the weapon console gets an idea and quickly targets near the ghost ship and fires a photon torpedo.
<Captain Decker (surprised and loud) – What the hell are you doing, ensign?!>
<Weapons control ensign (loud) – Hopefully distracting it, sir!>
The photon torpedo barely misses the ghost ship.
<Xon (disciplined and looking at his instruments> Captain. The ship is changing course and is heading towards the direction where the torpedo went.>
<Weapons control ensign – Sorry, sir, I just came up with the mouse and cheese idea since that thing seemed to like energy.>
<Captain Decker (impressed) – And it worked, lady, and it also given me an idea, like bread crumbs.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Do you plan to lure it somewhere?>
<Captain Decker – This thing seems to run on instinct, specially when it comes to energy which we just saw, but there has to be a limit of how much it can take.>
<Xon (disciplined) – That is true, but sadly we don’t have such an energy source that can do that in our possession.>
<Captain Decker – What about a sun? If this thing doesn’t have any self-preservation, then it may be drawn to it like a fly to a zapper.>
<Xon (disciplined) – If we can get it close enough without it getting us. It is faster then us and using the photon torpedo does have it’s limits when used in distractions when it comes to bringing it to a precious location. (inspired) Unless we can modify the torpedoes to act like mines that can be released through the hanger. That way we can slow down the ship when we have to while keeping it on course.>
<Captain Decker – Then let’s make the preparations.>
In the hanger of the Enterprise, people in space suits without the helmets that are not yet needed, have brought a pile of photon torpedoes that they’re modifying based on the plan. In the sickbay Doctor Cronkov is examining the gunk sample that was taken from the ghost ship and looks displeased to want he finds. The Enterprise finds the ghost ship which is dormant again. The people in the hanger puts on their helmets and attach their lifelines. When everything is ready, Captain Decker gives the order to fire a phaser at the ghost ship that awakens it and the Enterprise jumps into warp with the ghost ship following. When the ghost ship gets too close, the people in the hanger drops off a modified photon torpedo that free falls and starts to glow red and keeps the ghost ship busy for a moment. Captain Decker is a little nervous because they have a limited number of the torpedoes. The process is repeated several times until they only have three left and they have not yet reached their destination.
<Xon (disciplined) – We now have only three modified torpedoes left.>
The crew of the bridge look a bit nervous because they’re cutting this close. Another modified torpedo is used then later another where they now have only one left. Close to their destination while being force to use their last one. It’s becoming a close call as the ghost ship closer to the Enterprise.
<Captain Decker (direct and load) – Jump out of warp!!!>
Both the Enterprise and ghost ship come out of warp and the Enterprise heads for the sun at maximum impulse power with the ghost ship close behind. The ghost ship is about to get the Enterprise until she turns and the ghost ship attention is directed to the sun, a far greater energy source, and heads toward it to feed. It’s revealed that the sun is too much for the ghost ship to handle as it overloads and burns into nothing. The Enterprise flies away.
<Captain Decker (sweet relief) – I hope we never go through something like that again because I think we pushed our luck to the max and then some.>
<Xon (disciplined) – The odds did seem to be against us.>
< Doctor Cronkov (not seen and from chair communicator) – Captain? If the danger is over then there something we need to discuss.>
In the sickbay Doctor Cronkov and Captain Decker have discussed something.
<Captain Decker (concern) – Are you sure about this?
< Doctor Cronkov (concern) – According to what I found through the genetic scans, the “gunk” had a mutated mixture of human DNA as well as Vulcan, Andorian and Tellarite. I believe that ship may have been the Unity where they had founding member races of the Federation as a crew to be as a symbol of working together.>
<Captain Decker (concern) – Yeah, they mysteriously disappeared and people were worried that it would be the end of the Federation. That conspiracies would come up and people blaming either one of the four parties that made up the Federation at that time.>
< Doctor Cronkov (concern) – I would like to send the genetic files to starfleet to see if I’m right since they have more resources when it comes to things like this and maybe finding out how it happened, and if it was them, then maybe the departed can finally find peace with others knowing what happened to them.>
<Captain Decker (concern) – Yeah, do that.>
The Enterprise is moving through space.
<Captain Decker (not seen but heard) – Captain’s log supplemental. We may have finally learned the history of the “ghost ship” and answered a question from long ago, while also being reminded that there are always danger lurking in the unknown universe. I’m reminded of what our Kzinti “guest”, who we’ll be leaving in a place for his people to pick up, said about the ship being a weapon possessed by it’s long dead owners and how frightful it was that he was sorta right, thus showing that superstition can at times become a reality.>
The open space is shown with a “spark” seen at the distance and imagine scary music to make one wonder what other horrors are out there.
