The Enterprise is travelling at warp speed. Inside everything is going by routine with the bridge, other parts of the ship and even the engineer room. Scotty is checking on things to make sure the engine runs smoothly as well as the rest of his people who are shown working. A strange small craft enters the Enterprise through phasing. One of the workers calls for Scotty because she is receiving strange readings from the warp drive. Scotty takes a look and agrees with her that it is strange.
<Scotty (concern) – Aye, yer richt, lassie. That is certainly a wee bit odd.>
Suddenly the engine goes bonkers and everyone in the ship, including the bridge, feels the impact! Outside, the Enterprise’s warp field goes bonkers and comes to a halt while floating aimlessly in space!
<Scotty (worried) – Ah dae believe that somethin' has brokken.>
An hour later after getting everything as stable as it’s going to get since it’s a quick fix, Captain Decker and Xon meet with Scotty in the engineer room.
<Scotty (concern) – Ah cannae explain it, but it seems tae be sabotage, like a few important bits 'ave been nicked.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Could it have been someone who is assigned here?>
<Scotty – Ye'd need tae be a right numpty tae dae somethin' like that while the ship's in warp, and every soul here's skilled enough tae ken better.>
<Captain Decker – I need answers, people, because we’re lucky the ship didn’t explode, and if it was sabotage, we need to find the one responsible in case it happens again.>
<Xon (disciplined) – We can have some people scan the area for clues and review the security footage to see if there was anything suspicious.>
Above them is a small green creature in a worker jumpsuit while wearing goggles watching them.
The Enterprise is moving on impulse power.
<Captain Decker (not seen but heard) – Captain's log stardate { }. We are now in a predicament that has left us temporarily without a working warp drive while Mister Scott tells us that it will take a couple days to get it running again with the damage that the theft of certain components during warp has caused. Since it’s obvious that it wasn’t a malfunction, we can only assume that either it was someone within the crew.... or that we have an intruder.>
Inside the bridge, Captain Decker look at M’Ress.
<Captain Decker – Lieutenant? Please send a subspace message to starfleet about our situation.>
<M’Ress – Yes, captain.>
M’Ress works on the controls and then works on them some more as if she’s having trouble. The captain notices this and asks her if something is wrong.
<M’Ress (a little confused and working on the controls) – Captain. It seems that nothing is working.>
Xon comes over to check and then ask M’Ress if she could move aside so he can check under the panel. He comes up after he finds something.
<Xon (disciplined) – Captain. It would appear that some components are missing in this panel.>
<Captain Decker (a little confused) – How is that possible in a bridge full of people and M’Ress sitting next to that panel?>
<Xon (disciplined) – Logically it is not, and even if M’Ress was the suspect, it would still be impossible not to get caught.>
<M’Ress (mildly annoyed) – Thank you.>
<Xon (disciplined) – The only logical conclusion is that the intruder may perhaps be small enough or have other means to crawl through the spaces of the ship to remain unseen.>
<Captain Decker – It’s starting to feel like we have a gremlin problem.>
<Xon (disciplined) – One of your human myths which does fit the situation since this possible being is meddling with this ship’s functions which is putting the crew in danger.>
Later in the ship, mayhem happens in other areas like doors refusing to open and locking people in, the ship’s phasers going crazy without anyone “pulling the trigger” and the impulse engine going crazy with everyone in different parts of the ship trying to hang on. Scotty and his people heroically try their best to keep up with the repairs. On the bridge while the shaking continues, Captain Decker is on his chair and using the chair’s communicator!
<Captain Decker (serious and desperate) Scotty?! We need a miracle right now!>
<Scotty (not seen but heard for chair’s communicator) – Gie's a wee minute, cap'n, an' I'll get things tae settle doon!>
The Enterprise has stopped and is kinda floating in space. Back in the bridge.
<Captain Decker (relieved) – Good work, Scotty.>
<Scotty (not seen but heard for chair’s communicator) - Aye, but I'm feart we've nae warp nor impulse power.>
The sickbay is full of injured patients and the worse happens in a hallway with 4 people, where at first everything seemed fine, but the people there start having a hard time breathing and it gets worse. Later, people in space suits that look similar to Star Trek: The Motion Picture are taking the 4 dead bodies out. Captain Decker has that look in his face that says that this intruder has crossed the line. Security is working hard to find the intruder and Tar-rak shows the examined security footage through scanners where it roughly shows the small creature.
<Tar-rak (serious) - This is all we got of the little critter who’s so far done a good job staying out of sight which shows either talent or experience and looks like it has tools which shows it’s perhaps sentient.>
<Xon (disciplined) – And sentient means purpose. A plan.>
<Captain Decker – Sabotage?>
<Xon (disciplined) – One would think but some of it’s actions would seem “mischievous”, like the doors for example, and the missing components are not only not found but not even found damaged like a saboteur would do to make it difficult to make repairs on time. This creatures seems to be collecting for some reason and not really trying to kill us but simply not caring if we do get killed.>
<Tar-rak – So it’s simply theft.>
<Xon (disciplined) – The evidence does seem to point to that direction.>
Elsewhere in the ship, a security guard with a “flashlight” is searching the area. He finds the creature dismantling a tricorder as to see how it works and hisses at the security guard. The agile creature tries to attack the security guard who manages to swat the creature and make it hit a wall hard enough to knock it out! The creature is now restrained and making vocal sounds that doesn’t sound like a language and facing Captain Decker, Xon and Tar-rak.
<Tar-rak – It’s amazing that a little creature like this can be such a threat.>
<Xon (disciplined) – A ship in space that needs it’s systems to function for the crew to survive can make any meddler with the right skills dangerous.>
<Captain Decker (concern) – So how are we to communicate with it since the translator can’t tell us what it’s saying?>
<Xon (disciplined) – And creating a translation program based on a new and unknown language can take weeks or even months. I could make an attempt to mind meld with it.>
<Captain Decker – Ok, but let’s muzzle it so it can’t bite.>
Tar-rak is the one who muzzles the creature while Xon puts his hands on the reluctant little being. Xon starts to mind meld with the creature and soon he’s making the same sounds the creature makes that might be it’s language. Decker and Tar-rak seem to be a little worried about this. When Xon comes out of it, Decker asks if he was ok and at first he responds by talking like the creature but comes out of that as well.
<Xon (disciplined but a little confused) – Forgive me, Captain. The way the creature’s thought process works is quite different to what I have personally experienced in the past, but I do believe I can translate some of it.>
Tar-rak throws the creature into a small cage.
<Tar-Rak – welcome to your new home, ya little creep.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Captain, when you said we had a “gremlin problem”, it turned out that you were more right then you believed.>
<Captain Decker – Are you saying that this thing is really a gremlin?>
<Xon (disciplined) – While I am sure it’s kind has another name based on it’s language, it does appear that it’s kind once visited earth during your wars like world war II, and while they weren’t responsible for all the tragedies back in that time, they did cause some of them. They left the planet when they deemed it too primitive when it came to technology to steal and sell unless the client was an antique collector.>
<Tar-Rak (annoyed) – So it’s here to sell bits of the Enterprise to make a profit.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Correct. While I assume it does not do direct contact with the buyers since the species has kept itself as an unknown.>
Tar-rak’s wrist communicator beeps.
<Tar-rak (talking to the wrist communicator) – Tar-rak here.>
<Security officer (not seen and from wrist communicator) – Sir? I think we may have miscounted on how many little creatures there are!>
<Tar-rak (talking to the wrist communicator) – Miscounted? (annoyed) Ah’ gees! There’s more of them, isn’t there?>
In another part of the Enterprise, some security officers are firing with their phasers at the creatures but they’re too fast for them to make a hit!
<Security officer (struggling) – I’m guessing about ten and we’re having a real hard time hitting them with the phasers!>
<Tar-rak (not seen and from wrist communicator) – I got someone in mind that can help with that. I’ll give him a call.>
Moments later, Arex arrives with a phaser in each hand and is about to show everyone the hand/eye coordination of a Edosian. As if his three hands had minds of their own, Arex fires the phasers at the creatures and starts stunning them. The creatures are restrained and the danger is over. Tar-rak is talking to Arex.
<Tar-rak – Seriously, dude! You should trade your shirt for a red one.>
<Arex – And give up driving a big ship?>
Scotty and his people are making repairs and the Enterprise finally reached a starfleet space station. Captain Decker is inside the office of the one in charge of the space station which is a Andorian woman named Commander Sh'eseth. They look at the “gremlin” prisoners in cages being moved through a view screen.
< Commander Sh'eseth – So another myth proven to be true.>
<Captain Decker – That’s space travelling for ya when it comes to seeking new life and civilization. I doubt I’ll be surprised if Santa Clause turns out to be real. Oh’ and be sure to watch them closely since two of them almost got out of their cages.>
<Commander Sh'eseth (a little surprised) – Two of them?>
<Captain Decker – They’re really good at messing around with tech and Xon suggest using force field cages where they can’t reach anything.>
<Commander Sh'eseth – We’ll get it done.>
Captain Decker takes his leave and the Enterprise moves away from the space station.
