The Enterprise is seen moving at warp speed.
<Captain Decker (not seen but heard) – Captain’s log stardate { }. Once again we’re meeting someone who has become “post-warp” called the Zeeracals, and this time the federation did some
thorough checking, but what makes this puzzling is that they don’t use warp technology. From what I am told, they found a way to open a portal to a different type of space which they call “blue space” that is folded which greatly shortens the distance from point A to point B so to speak, thus allowing them to reach a destination before light does while not really moving faster then light like warp speed. Merely taking a shortcut. The tech guys from starfleet are very intrigued by this and wonders if a warp field can be made in blue space, like in normal space, and if the combining of the two would greatly shorten a trip that would normally take years under warp alone.>
NOTE: Think of Babylon 5 and it’s hyperspace when comparing to blue space.
The Enterprise comes out of warp and heads towards the planet Micrac, the home planet of the Zeeracals. Captain Decker, Xon and a Andorian guest named Commander Thelin beam down on the planet. They meet the leader who’s name is Martoven who is a female Zeeracal. Zeeracals are purple skin humanoids.
NOTE: Thelin is from the TAS episode Yesteryear and this is like his life in the restored original timeline.
<Martoven (delighted) – Thank you for excepting our invitation of witnessing this perhaps great experiment.>
<Captain Decker – And thank you, Madam Martoven, for the federation, as well as starfleet, are excited to see where this will lead.>
<Martoven – Speaking of starfleet. Some of your people have been asking us of stuff like if a “warp field?” can be created in blue space and I’m afraid we lacked the understanding to answer that question.>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – Our apologies. It would seem that there are others who are even more excited.>
<Captain Decker – This is Commander Thelin. A science officer who has been assigned to observe the event and report his findings to starfleet.>
Commander Thelin nods his head as a way of a greeting. The group starts to walk toward the place where they will observe the event.
<Xon (disciplined) – I have to say that I find it quite fascinating that your people discovered a new way of interstellar travel. Usually it is warp technology that a society discovers.>
<Martoven (pleased) – And we take great pride in our discovery of blue space and we hope that with the federation we will help reach further into the unknown and meet new life and civilizations which I believe is starfleet’s motto.>
They reached their destination which is a booth and see a Zeeracal ship at a somewhat distance.
<Martoven (pleased) – We originally used a prototype portal gate and a beacon built in when we first experimented with blue space and of course not have our pilots go too far away until we were sure it was safe. Our scientists now have developed a portal engine and something called a portal navigation scanner where a very small portal inside the device opens to normal space to get an idea where they are without getting lost. This would allow a ship using the technology to have the freedom the roam the universe.>
The Zeeracal ship is about to lift off after pre-checks are made. The ship lifts up into the sky and into space. On the bridge of the Enterprise they are watching through the main view-screen.
<M’Ress (amused) – You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?>
<Scotty (amused and in the captain chair) – Aye, I’m no ashamed tae admit I feel like a kid that’s aboot tae watch a braw show.>
On the planet, the crowd is also watching though a big view-screen “hologram”. Once the Zeeracal ship is far away from the planet it’s starts shooting a blue beam that opens the portal to blue space and the ship goes through it. The captain of the Zeeracal ship is seen through the big view-screen.
<Zeeracal captain (in charge and through big view-screen) – We are now releasing the outside camera.>
The outside camera leaves the ship and the background of blue space looks like blue clouds covering everything. On the big view-screen on the planet shows the ship in blue space and the bridge of the Enterprise is getting the feed through their main view-screen. The Zeeracal ship starts to move with their thrusters and the viewpoint of the outside camera follows.
<Zeeracal captain (not seen but heard) – Now activating the portal navigation scanner and setting a course to the finish line.>
The Zeeracal ship increases impulse power to go faster but in a way that it would in normal space. On the bridge of the Enterprise.
<Scotty – Hm, no’ quite as excitin’ lookin’ as makin’ a wee jump intae warp speed.>
<Arex – I’ll be impressed if they do make it in a couple of days since the finish line is a few light years away.>
Back on the planet.
<Martoven (pleased) – And now we wait. You’re welcome to stay and continue to watch or perhaps explore our city and learn more about us. I have other matters to attend to as minister.>
<Captain Decker – Thank you, madam, we may just do that.>
Martoven leaves.
<Commander Thelin (professional) – I suppose this is where we “cross our fingers” and hope things go smoothly.>
<Captain Decker – You think something may go wrong?>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – An experiment always has the possibility of something going wrong and it would be foolish to have a victory party until making sure you will have a victory.>
<Xon (disciplined) – There is some logic to that.>
<Captain Decker (curious) – Speaking of the experiment, I was told that you wanted this mission because you were curious about the Enterprise.>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – Some time ago some officials visited me to make sure there weren’t any time anomalies.>
<Xon (disciplined with one eyebrow up) – Time anomalies?)
<Commander Thelin (professional) – Yes, according to them there was an incident involving the Guardian of Forever where the timeline was changed where Mister Spock died as a child, while the adult Spock somehow still existed to fix the problem, but during that time I was told that I was the science officer of the Enterprise. Naturally I was curious and thought this would be a perfect opportunity of satisfying it while performing my duties.>
<Xon (disciplined) – Fascinating.>
<Captain Decker – Well, since we have nothing to do for now we might as well act like tourists and look around. To get a better understanding of their culture.>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – I believe they have a museum nearby that we’ll give us an idea about their history.>
A day later, Captain Decker is sleeping in his “phase II” Captain's quarters until he gets a call beep.
<M’Ress (not seen but from communicator) – Captain Decker?>
<Captain Decker (a bit tired) – Yes. What is it?>
<M’Ress (not seen but from communicator) – Minister Martoven is on the line and it seems serious. Something about the ship of theirs.>
Later, Captain Decker, Xon and Commander Thelin meet with Martoven at her office.
<Martoven (worried) – We received this from the ship.>
They look at the view-screen and it shows the Zeeracal captain who looks depressed and is crying.
<Zeeracal captain (crying) – My granddaughter is dead! Dead and there was nothing I could do about it!>
<Martoven (worried and after the viewing) – The captain that we know of only has a son who’s still little and we have no idea who’s this granddaughter he mentioned is. We tried to contact them with no response and we know that they’re still in blue space because of the outside camera while the fail-safe beacon says that they’re far away.>
<Xon (disciplined) – That would mean that the only way to help them is if others went into blue space themselves.>
<Captain Decker – You mentioned that you had a prototype portal-gate, right? Is it still working?>
<Martoven – It would have to be taken out of storage and put back together by our experts, but I think we can get it done.>
<Captain Decker – I’ll have my people help yours to speed things up.>
Martoven goes to her communicator on her desk to make the arrangements.
<Xon (disciplined) – Captain, you do realize that the Enterprise isn’t exactly equipped for blue space navigation since we do not have a portal navigation scanner.>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – We will have to rely on the fail-safe beacon of the ship to find them and the beacon on the portal-gate to return if we can’t use their portal-engine.>
<Captain Decker (serious) – It’s risky, but right now we’re the only chance those people have.>
Hours later, the portal-gate is put together and is in space. The Enterprise gets ready to enter once the portal-gate activates. Inside the bridge.
<Captain Decker (in charge) – Get ready, people, because we’re about to enter a new frontier. Scotty?>
<Scotty (not seen and from chair communicator) – Aye, captain, we’re as ready as we cannae be.>
Outside, the portal-gate activates and the Enterprise goes through to enter blue space.
<M’Ress – We’re connected to the fail-safe beacon, sir.>
<Captain Decker (in charge) – We don’t know how a warp field will affect blue space so we’ll rely solely on impulse power. Lieutenant Arex? Steady as she goes.>
<Arex – Yes, sir.>
At impulse power, the Enterprise moves through blue space like it would with normal space. Xon is focused on his console taking readings.
<Xon (disciplined) – It would appear that the level in blue space when it comes to the folding of space seems to make it similar to warp 5 in normal space terms. Also, it may have been wise of you, captain, to use impulse only since I believe it is possible that using warp speed would have caused a massive instability that would have destroyed the ship.>
<Captain Decker – Well, the tech people at starfleet will probably not be happy about that.>
2 hours later, the Enterprise is still flying through blue space. A crew member walks through the hallway and sees Scotty on the floor crying.
<Crew member (concern and a little confused) – Mister Scott? Are you alright?>
<Scotty (crying) – Ma wee nephew Peter. That rotten swine Khan went an’ killed him.>
The crew member helps Scotty up and takes him to sickbay.
<Scotty (crying) – Whit am I gonnae tell ma sister? That I failed him?>
At the sickbay, Scotty is depressed with a blank stare. Doctor Cacloor, Captain Decker and Commander Thelin are there.
<Doctor Cacloor (concern) – I see nothing wrong with him while he keeps saying that his nephew is dead.>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – I took the liberty of doing some checking with records and he does have a little nephew named Peter except that he’s alive.>
<Captain Decker (concern) – This reminds me of that Zeeracal captain and a granddaughter that we were told didn’t exist. Could blue space being causing this.>
<Doctor Cacloor (concern) – If this dimension has an affect on one’s brain functions then Mister Scott may likely be only the first case.>
Suddenly a crew member brings another crew member in who’s in turmoil.
<Crew member (desperate) - Doctor Cacloor! Something is wrong with Ensign Micheal! He keeps saying that he just died of old age!>
<Doctor Cacloor (concern) – We best be ready for more.>
The Enterprise in blue space finally reaches a damaged Zeeracal ship. Some security people beam aboard and bring them to the Enterprise. Some are depressed while others are fine and say their experience was actually good.
<Tar-rak (talking to his wrist communicator) We’re moving them as fast as we can while they’re bringing a few small black boxes with them.>
<One of the Zeeracal crew – These are data cases and the compact and module kind are the best way of saving valuable data.>
<Tar-rak (talking to his wrist communicator) Huh, that actually sounds better then just downloading.... One of them has told us that one of their engineers panicked and said something about dying here and got himself killed that ended up damaging their portal-engine.>
Back on the bridge of the Enterprise, Xon has a theory.
<Xon (disciplined) – I believe what some are experiencing are memories from their own future.... or possible future.>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – Do you have any proof to back that up?>
<Xon (disciplined) – The ones affected by this so far and are able to talk mention things that never happened, or better yet, not yet happened like Ensign Zaand here being part of the crew of the Enterprise after it received it’s phase III refit. Also, I am one of them since I “remember” having a position at Starfleet Academy which is something I have not yet done.>
<Captain Decker – So it’s possible that being inside blue space is making people get a glimpse of their futures whether it’s good or bad.>
<Xon (disciplined) – That does seem very likely.>
Captain Decker looks at M’Ress.
<Captain Decker (in charge) – Lieutenant? Make sure you keep a hold on the beacon of the portal-gate, because once everyone and the data they’re bringing with them are on board, we’ll be heading back imminently.>
<M’Ress – Yes, Captain.>
Suddenly! Captain Decker gets a mental attack that makes him fall off his chair! He sees a vision that’s a scene from Star Trek: The Motion Picture where he’s being converted into energy in V'ger’s domain with the duplicated Ilia. Back on the bridge, Captain Decker seems to be in agony.
<Xon (disciplined and talking to a communicator) – Bridge to sickbay. We have a medical emergency.>
Two crew members help Captain Decker leave the bridge, but before that, Captain Decker makes sure he is heard.
<Captain Decker (in a little agony) – Lieutenant Arex. After the crew of the other ship is on board, I want you to go full impulse to the beacon of the portal-gate. We need to get out of blue space as quickly as possible.>
At the sickbay, Doctor Cacloor is with the depressed Scotty.
<Scotty (depressed) – Ah cannae explain it. Ah wis arguin’ wi’ a Counselor named Deanna Troi while stuck in the 24th century.>
Captain Decker is brought into sickbay.
<Doctor Cacloor – Let me guess. Bad memories from the future? Oh’ by the way, I’m going to have twin grandsons someday.>
<Captain Decker (in a little agony) Congratulations.>
Back on the bridge.
<Tar-rak (not seen and from communicator) – We have everyone in. It’s clear to go.>
<Xon (disciplined) – I believe you already received your orders, Lieutenant Arex.>
<Arex (focused) – Going at 1/4 the speed of light.>
The Enterprise moves through blue space at full impulse power until it reaches the portal-gate and comes back to normal space. A day later, Captain Decker and Commander Thelin visit Martoven.
<Martoven – The captain, and anyone else that was affected by blue space in a negative matter, seemed to have miraculously recover.>
<Captain Decker – Xon believes that the memories of the future, even being told about it by others, couldn’t be maintained outside of blue space. So even though we know we saw a piece of the future, we don’t remember what it was or whether it was good or bad.>
<Martoven – But of course we have a sort of record of the captain's granddaughter that he will one day have, but I don’t know whether I should tell him or not. Like would it save her from her fate, or cause it, or would it prevent her from existing in the first place?>
Captain Decker and Commander Thelin stay silence because they have no way to answer that.
<Martoven (a bit disappointed) – I suppose this means that we failed the federation’s requirements to join since blue space is too dangerous to use.>
<Commander Thelin (professional) – Not exactly. It’s true about blue space, but it doesn’t change the fact that your people accomplished faster then light travel on your own, while being unique about it, and it is what the federation really looks for when it comes to members. You have proven yourself and the federation would like you join them with open arms.>
The Enterprise is seen moving through space.
<Captain Decker (not seen but heard) – Captain’s log supplemental. Things didn’t go exactly as one would hope, but in the end it worked out for the planet Micrac and Commander Thelin stayed behind to make the necessary arrangements. I still have that nagging feeling of what I may have seen. It is frustrating on wondering if my future is good or bad but perhaps at times ignorance can truly be a blessing.>
