The text is definitely designed for entry-level nursing students and covers fewer exemplars/drug classes than other texts I have utilized in pharmacology courses (missing immune modulators, contraceptives, chemotherapy agents, meds for OAB and BPH), but presents common drug classes in a concise and understandable way. The glossary and table of contents are excellent.

Reading level is appropriate for an introduction to pharmacology course, seems suitable for multi-lingual students. Bolded text offers basic definitions of unfamiliar words. The Nursing Pharmacology OER by the Wisconsin Technical College System authored by Chippewa Valley Technical College is comprehensive for entry level nursing students that covers areas aligned with our curriculum and end of program student learning outcomes in pharmacology. The Table of Content was easy to read and well organized. Each chapter covered the learning objectives, an introduction, basic concepts and principles, medication types, effects, considerations and safety in preparation and administration, module learning activities and interactive activities, critical thinking activities and a glossary. Answer keys were provided at the end of the book. The references were evidenced-based and comprehensive.

This book is definitely a good resource for the first semester nursing students taking up pharmacology for the first time as well as graduate nurses seeking to review topics covered in the various chapters. The length of each chapter and subsections were not so lengthy to lose the interest of the reader, making it easy to understand and remember.

I thought this book was a valuable resource. My biggest advice would be to include some more about the basics of pharmacology, including more on safe medication administration. Include drug formulation and more about standardization. Go into some pharmacological history, and how drugs are developed as well. Understanding development can be the basis of understanding drugs. In the future, if it could be linked with an OER drug guide for more medication profiles and examples, that would assist students greatly.

The Open RN project is funded by a $2.5 million dollar grant from the Department of Education to create 5 OER Nursing Textbooks with 25 associated virtual reality scenarios. The project is led by Chippewa Valley Technical College, and the textbooks are being collaboratively written with faculty from Wisconsin technical colleges. The books will be reviewed nationally by nursing faculty, deans, healthcare alliance members, and other industry representatives to ensure the content is current and accurate. Objectives: One of the major duties of nurses is proper medication administration while maintaining patient safety, which requires sufficient knowledge and practice. Any gaps in knowledge used by nurses can lead to irreversible injury or death of the patient. This study is aimed to determine and compare the pharmacology knowledge and performance of nurses and nursing students in using the information resources in pediatrics wards.

Method: This descriptive observational study was performed on 300 nurses and nursing students. Sources of knowledge and performance of nurses and nursing students were analyzed with researcher-made tools to determine their pharmaceutical knowledge, sources of knowledge, and attitudes by independent t-test, chi-square, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson, and Spearman tests.

Result: Three hundred questionnaires were examined. The clinical experience of nurses and students was their most important source of information in drug challenges for 33.7% of the participants. About 24.6% of nurses obtained the required information from specialized books on pediatric medicine. About 17.1% of the participants attained their knowledge from multiple sources (e.g. various available sources such as the Internet, pharmacy books, software, and their experiences and colleagues), while electronic sources and the Internet were the sources of knowledge for 15.5% and 7.7% of the nurses, respectively. Concerning nursing students, 6.3% used books, 41.7% considered colleagues (clinical experiences), 20.8% employed electronic resources, 22.8% used the Internet, and 9.1% relied on multiple sources. There were significant differences in the knowledge and performance of the nurses based on their source of pharmacological knowledge (P < 0.05).

Conclusion: Most of the resources used in the hospital are not up-to-date and evidence-base, and the majority of nurses tend to rely on their clinical experience or their collegues information for medication administration rather than reading books or searching for up-to-date approaches and information. Nursing students also trust nurses' clinical experiences more than other sources provided for them including books and Internet. Some action should be taken by the managers for boosting the nurses' tendency for using up-to-date information resources. 2351a5e196
