About the Session

Pittsburgh Scottish Sessions are led by pipers Casey and George Smith.

This session usually happens on either the third or fourth Sunday of the month between 3 and 5 p.m.

Join our Pittsburgh Scottish Session Facebook Group for regular updates.

Send an email to ceolbuntata.pasted366@passinbox.com with the subject line "Pittsburgh Scottish Sessions" if you'd like to receive session updates by email.

House Rules

We want this to be a fun and welcoming experience.  If you've never been to a session before you may want to check out the Session Etiquette page from our friends at PGH Sessions.

There are a few things we like to do differently:

  • Open to All Levels
In general we welcome anyone to join in, though it is highly suggested that you at least have a basic familiarity with Scottish or Irish traditional music and some competency on your instrument. If you're not quite there yet, we would love it if you would come to listen!

  • Open to Most Instruments
The most common instruments are smallpipes, uilleann pipes, fiddles, whistles, and percussion. If the instrument you have is particularly unusual, reach out to Casey or George to see if we can make it work.

A note for highland pipers: The volume level of this event is much lower than the great highland bagpipe. Feel free to bring a practice chanter pitched in the key of A or an electronic chanter and speaker that can play in the key of A.

  • Ballad Singers Welcome
Singers of traditional Scottish or Irish songs and ballads are welcome.

  • Sheet Music is Allowed
Yes, sheet music is allowed. We get it! We recommend not sight reading on the day, but if you need 'the dots' or a chord sheet for a while...that's okay with us.
