While personal projects give us an opportunity to explore an area of our interest and deep learn the real-world phenomena, academic disciplines give us the foundation to enrich our investigation and exploration while doing a personal project.
Linking our personal projects to academic disciplines displays our ability to communicate our ideas with a rich academic orientation. This allows us to not just cater to a general audience but to propose and present our studies to a committee of academic experts.
You can now link your personal project to any domain of Humanities and the English Language only.
Here is an example to help you understand how to link a personal project with academic disciplines.
Let's say a student decides on a personal project in the area of study "Has technology changed the way we eat food?"
The student might be interested in both food and technology. That's how the inspiration for the above ideas might have been formed.
The student takes the global context "identity" and decides to pick the strand "How we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs, and values"s
From the playlist, the student chooses human behaviour as the project
Student A might decide to link History as a subject and cover how the social change from hunter and gather to an industrial society.
Student B might decide to link the subject of English and cover the concept of globalisation and technology or cover the concept of culture or Business studies and look at the expansion of the global food industry by writing an article/blog/expression through other means.
Finalise a minimum of one subject or both subjects you want to link. Decide one concept from the syllabus which is part of the subject that you would like to link.
Once you decide the subject(s) to be linked, you would need to communicate the same to your mentor so that the subject teachers can be communicated the same.
You can explore the subject topic in correlation to your personal project in one of the following ways:
Show your knowledge and understanding of the subject(s) concept/topic. For example, the definition.
Show your ability to connect the understanding of the subject(s) concept/topic with your personal project area of study
Use the knowledge of the subject(s) concept/topic to develop a scientific inquiry / your arguments/reasons to support your research findings
Use the knowledge of the subject(s) concept/topic to address/explain/respond to a real-world problem that you have taken up as part of your personal project
Please note that the subject your link and the concept you cover would be assessed as part of your subject formative assessment and marks will be added as part of your report card.
You can find inspiration in any area of study but will find linkage with Humanities and/or English Language to make it part of the assessment cycle.
