The income people living in each state and the District of Columbia get from wages, proprietors' income, dividends, interest, rents, and government benefits. These statistics help assess and compare the economic well-being of state residents.

To calculate personal income, all income collectively received by individuals or households in a country needs to be tallied up. That is not only gross pay from work but also dividends, rental income, interest, and so forth. Disposable income is then calculated by taking the personal income number and subtracting personal income taxes.

Note: Nonresidents and part-year residents must prorate the tax based on the ratio of their Wisconsin income to their federal adjusted gross income. See the Wisconsin Form 1NPR for further details.

The Wisconsin sales tax is a 5% tax imposed on the sales price of retailers who sell, license, lease, or rent tangible personal property, certain coins and stamps, certain leased property affixed to realty, or certain digital goods, or sell, license, perform, or furnish taxable services in Wisconsin. See What is Taxable for more information.

The Wisconsin use tax is a 5% tax imposed on the purchase price of tangible personal property, certain coins and stamps, certain leased property affixed to realty, certain digital goods, or taxable services that are used, stored, or consumed within Wisconsin, but upon which a Wisconsin sales or use tax has not previously been paid. See Use Tax for more information.

County tax is imposed on the sales price from retail sales, licenses, leases, or rentals of tangible personal property, certain coins and stamps, certain leased property affixed to realty, certain digital goods, or the selling, licensing, performing, or furnishing of taxable services in a county with a county tax. Exceptions to the county tax treatment and special situations are explained in Publication 201, Wisconsin Sales and Use Tax Information, Part 18.D.

City tax is imposed on the sales price from retail sales, licenses, leases, or rentals of tangible personal property, certain coins and stamps, certain leased property affixed to realty, certain digital goods, or the selling, licensing, performing, or furnishing of taxable services to a location in the city of Milwaukee.

For all individuals who are retired from the federal government, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, or a Kentucky local government with service performed prior to January 1, 1998, you may be able to exclude more than $31,110*. If your pension income is greater than $31,110, you will need to complete Kentucky Schedule P, Kentucky Pension Income Exclusion to determine how much of your pension income is taxable. You may use the worksheet in the Schedule P instructions or you may use the Schedule P calculator to determine your exempt percentage.

The family size tax credit is based on modified gross income and the size of the family. If total modified gross income is $36,908 or less for 2022, you may qualify for the Kentucky family size tax credit.

A credit equal to 25 percent of the amount of the federal American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit is available. The credit applies only to undergraduate studies, phases out for higher incomes, applies to most higher education opportunities within Kentucky and may be carried forward for up to five (5) years.

When you itemize deductions on your federal return you are allowed to deduct state income taxes or sales taxes that you paid during the year. This deduction reduces your federal taxable income. If any part of the state income tax you deducted on your federal return is later refunded to you that amount must be reported as taxable income for the year in which the refund is issued.

Kentucky use tax may be due on internet, mail order, or other out-of-state purchases made throughout the year. Please click here to see if you are required to report Kentucky use tax on your individual income tax return.

Personal income tax is collected from individuals or entities. When you file your tax return annually on or before the April filing deadline, you are reconciling the amount of taxes you have paid along with any additions, credits, and deductions. Personal income tax is generally paid throughout the year based on earnings and employment status. Your employer withholds taxes from each paycheck and sends it to the Department of Taxes. If you are self-employed, you must pay your own tax to the Department, usually quarterly.

When you file a Vermont income tax return, you will need a statement from your employer showing earnings. If you are self-employed, you do not have to file any specific documents to show earnings, but the Department may request proof of earnings if you claim a tax credit, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. You also will need statements showing income from investments and other sources. These statements may include one or more of the following:

Residents of Multnomah County will have 100% of their Oregon Taxable Income subject to the tax thresholds. For non-residents of Multnomah County, income sourced within the County will be subject to the tax thresholds. Please refer to our FAQ for further clarification.

Itemized or Standard Deductions. From state AGI, taxpayers deduct the greater of the total of their itemized deductions or the standard deduction for their filing status (single, married filing jointly, head of household, etc.). A filer who itemizes cannot claim the standard deduction, and likewise a filer who claims the standard deduction gets no benefit from their itemized deductions. Figure 2 shows a breakdown of the $200 billion in standard and itemized deductions claimed in 2014, which reduced taxable income to about $1 trillion.

Volatility From the PIT Base. In our previous report on PIT volatility (Volatility of the Personal Income Tax Base), we found that the current PIT tax base has an AD of 6.3. This means that the base is almost three times as volatile as personal income. The 4.0 difference in AD explains about 40 percent of the 9.9 AD difference between personal income and PIT.

If you are self-employed or do not have Maryland income taxes withheld by an employer, you can make quarterly estimated tax payments as part of a pay-as-you-go plan, using Form PV. Please refer to Payment Voucher Worksheet (PVW) for estimated tax and extension payments instructions.

The tax is determined using tax tables furnished by the Louisiana Department of Revenue. The tax rate is applied in a graduated scale using the taxpayer's filing status and the taxpayer's Louisiana taxable income. Recent changes to the tax rate are reflected as follows:

Effective for tax year 2022, Revised Statute 47:103 allows a six-month automatic extension of time to file the individual income tax return. If you know you cannot file your return by the due date, you do not need to file for an extension. No paper or electronic extension form needs to be filed to obtain the automatic filing extension.

An extension does not allow an extension of time to pay the tax due. Payments received after the return due date will be charged interest and late payment penalty.

Resident taxpayers who are required to file a federal individual income tax return are required to file a Louisiana income tax return, IT-540, reporting all of their income. If a Louisiana resident earns income in another state, that income is also taxable by Louisiana. A temporary absence from Louisiana does not automatically change your domicile for individual income tax purposes. As a resident taxpayer, you are allowed a credit on Schedule G for the net tax liability paid to another state if that income is included on the Louisiana return.

Residents may be allowed a deduction from taxable income of certain income items considered exempt by Louisiana law. For example, Louisiana residents who are members of the armed services and who were stationed outside the state on active duty for 120 or more consecutive days are entitled to a deduction of up to $30,000 and starting with tax year 2022, $50,000. In each case, the amount of income subject to a deduction must be included on the Louisiana resident return before the deduction can be allowed.

Nonresident and part-year resident taxpayers who are required to file a federal individual income tax return are required to file a Louisiana income tax return, IT-540B, reporting all income earned from Louisiana sources. The calculation for the IT-540B requires that a taxpayer report all income from all sources in order to determine a ratio of Louisiana adjusted gross income to Federal adjusted gross income. Only income earned from Louisiana sources, however, is taxed.

Gambling winnings earned in Louisiana is considered to be Louisiana sourced income. A nonresident who received gambling winnings from Louisiana sources and who is required to file a federal income tax return must file a Louisiana return reporting the Louisiana income earned. If the amount withheld is overpaid, a refund of the difference will be issued or credited to the tax liability for the following year, based upon the taxpayer's return. ff782bc1db
