If you want a comprehensive aerosol solution for dampening caliper vibration and preventing corrosion on disc brakes, choose Permatex 80077; if you need a high-temperature, precision ceramic paste specifically for caliper pins and slide bolts that withstands extreme heat, choose LUSTRIO Ceramic Brake Grease. Both products address the critical issue of brake noise and component protection, yet they serve distinct mechanical roles within the braking system. One is designed as a broad-spectrum spray for pad interfaces, while the other is a concentrated lubricant engineered for moving metal-to-metal contact points under severe thermal stress. Understanding this fundamental difference is the key to selecting the right tool for your emergency kit or routine maintenance garage.
• The Verdict: Choose Permatex for a general "spray-and-go" approach to quieting pads and protecting against rust, and choose LUSTRIO when you require heavy-duty lubrication for slide pins and high-performance heat resistance.
The Permatex 80077 Disc Brake Quiet is designed primarily as a solution for the acoustic side of braking. Its core function is to stop brake squealing by effectively dampening vibration at the caliper and brake pad interface. This is a critical feature for any vehicle owner who has ever heard that high-pitched, annoying screech every time they press the pedal. The product achieves this through a formulation that creates a barrier between the pad and the backing plate, reducing the friction-induced chatter that causes noise. If you are dealing with a car that has developed a habit of singing rather than stopping silently, this spray targets that specific problem directly.
The packaging itself tells a story about its intended use case. You do not need to wrestle with messy tubes or applicator brushes; you simply aim and spray. This makes it an ideal candidate for quick fixes or for those who prefer a cleaner workflow. The design allows for a tighter fit during reassembly and facilitates easier disassembly later, which suggests it is formulated to be non-gummy and easy to clean off if needed. It protects against corrosion as well, ensuring that the components remain free from rust even in wet or salty conditions.
This product is best suited for DIYers and mechanics who need a versatile, all-around spray for automotive disc brakes, outboard pads, and inboard pads. It is compatible with anti-lock brake systems, adding a layer of safety assurance for modern vehicles equipped with ABS technology. However, you should skip this product if your primary goal is to lubricate sliding caliper pins or to protect bolts from seizing under extreme track temperatures. While it offers excellent corrosion protection, it does not claim the same level of thermal stability as dedicated high-heat pastes. If your brake job involves removing and reinstalling slide pins that are prone to sticking, this spray might not provide the necessary long-term adhesion or heat resistance required for that specific task. It is a broad-spectrum tool, not a specialized surgical instrument for high-stress mechanical joints.

LUSTRIO Ceramic Brake Grease takes a completely different approach, focusing intensely on the mechanical integrity of the caliper assembly rather than just the noise factor. This product is a high-performance formula designed to deliver exceptional lubrication between metal contact points, specifically targeting caliper pins, bolts, and brackets. The goal here is to ensure smooth, responsive brake engagement every time you hit the road. By reducing friction at these critical pivot points, the grease prevents the uneven movement that often leads to premature wear and noise. It acts as a reliable alternative to silicone-based greases, offering high adhesion that keeps the lubricant in place during the rigorous demands of routine or full brake jobs.
The standout feature of the LUSTRIO grease is its ability to withstand extreme temperatures. It performs reliably from -30°F to 2000°F, maintaining a stable consistency without melting or hardening in severe conditions. This thermal resilience makes it ideal for heavy-duty applications, performance driving, or vehicles that operate in harsh environments where standard lubricants might break down. When brake components get hot, many greases turn into liquid or bake into a solid crust, both of which fail to protect the metal. LUSTRIO resists this fate, ensuring that the caliper pins remain free-moving even after repeated heating and cooling cycles. This protection extends the lifespan of the entire brake system by preventing seizing and corrosion caused by moisture, salt, and road grime.
Who should buy this? It is perfect for professionals and serious DIY enthusiasts who understand that the health of the brake system relies heavily on the condition of the slide pins and bolts. If you are performing a complete brake service, replacing pads, or working on a vehicle that sees aggressive driving, this grease is essential. It reduces chatter and vibration, contributing to a quieter ride, but its primary strength lies in its anti-seize capabilities. You should skip this product if you are looking for a large-volume spray to coat entire backing plates quickly or if you need a product specifically marketed for "quieting" pads without addressing the mechanical pivot points. It is a specialist tool for keeping the moving parts of your brake system alive and kicking under pressure.
• Best for broad vibration dampening → Permatex 80077, as its spray formula is explicitly designed to stop squealing at the pad interface.
• Best for extreme heat resistance → LUSTRIO Ceramic Brake Grease, capable of handling temperatures up to 2000°F without degrading.
• Best for caliper pin lubrication → LUSTRIO, which focuses on preventing seizing and ensuring smooth movement of slide pins and bolts.
• Best for anti-seize protection → LUSTRIO, creating a robust barrier against moisture and salt specifically for threaded hardware and pins.
• Best for ABS compatibility → Permatex 80077, confirmed to work safely with anti-lock brake systems.
• Best for precision application → LUSTRIO, where a small tube ensures you apply exactly what is needed to specific contact points without mess.
• Best for emergency kits → Permatex 80077 offers a larger volume and easier spray mechanism for quick, general brake noise issues on the go.
When weighing these options, consider the specific symptoms your vehicle is exhibiting. If the car is noisy but the brakes feel normal, the Permatex spray addresses the sound directly. If the brakes feel sticky, sluggish, or if you are doing a preventative maintenance job on the hardware, the LUSTRIO grease is the necessary choice. The two products are not interchangeable; using one in place of the other could lead to suboptimal results. For instance, trying to lubricate a seized caliper pin with a spray designed for pad dampening will likely fail because the spray lacks the necessary viscosity and adhesion to stay on the pin under load. Conversely, trying to coat a whole backing plate with a tiny tube of grease is inefficient and wasteful.
In my opinion, I would choose the Permatex 80077 for a general-purpose emergency kit because the aerosol format allows for rapid deployment on squealing brakes, and the larger volume handles multiple vehicles or repeated applications better than a small tube. However, for a dedicated brake overhaul where I am replacing pads and servicing caliper pins, I would absolutely reach for the LUSTRIO Ceramic Brake Grease. Its ability to handle 2000°F and prevent seizing on slide pins is a non-negotiable feature for long-term reliability. Ultimately, the Permatex is the best choice for immediate noise reduction in an emergency scenario, while the LUSTRIO is the superior technical solution for mechanical longevity.
While Permatex 80077 stops squeal and protects against corrosion, it is not formulated as a high-adhesion anti-seize lubricant for slide pins. For best results on pins and bolts, LUSTRIO is recommended due to its superior adhesion and extreme heat resistance.
LUSTRIO Ceramic Brake Grease is engineered to withstand temperatures up to 2000°F without melting or hardening, making it significantly more durable in high-heat environments than standard brake sprays.
Yes, the Permatex 80077 is compatible with anti-lock brake systems (ABS) and is suggested for use on automotive disc brakes, including both outboard and inboard pads.
Ideally, yes. Use Permatex to dampen vibration on the pad backs and LUSTRIO to lubricate the caliper pins and bolts. This combination covers both the noise aspect and the mechanical movement aspect of the braking system.
