Fall 2024

We are pleased to resume our regular Monday night classes for the Fall semester:

7 - 8 pm: Intermediate class

8 - 9 pm: Beginner class

9 pm onwards: open Practica

Intermediate class is great for dancers with some experience. Beginner class is perfect for dancers who are new to tango, or would like a refresher. The Practica is open to all members regardless of level.

You are welcome to take your first class for free before signing up for club membership.

For class locations, please subscribe to our listserv below or write to us at PennTango@gmail.com.

After three weeks of instructor trials, we are pleased to announce Jake and Dasha as our new instructors going forward!

Jake Spatz founded TangoDC in 2005, became house teacher at the popular Eastern Market milonga in 2006, and became the instructor for the University of Maryland’s Terrapin Tango Club in 2010. He has performed in festivals, feature-length plays, commercials, and live shows at the Kennedy Center, Disney World, and Washington Performing Arts Society. He continues to hone his craft by attending masterclasses, and is also a noted tango DJ and translator of tango lyrics.

Dasha Khripkova began DJing in Philadelphia in 2008, and after moving to DC she co-hosted and taught at Eastern Market with Jake since 2010. They were featured dancers in the How Philly Moves mural at the Philadelphia Airport. Dasha and Jake moved to Philadelphia in 2023, and they run Fairmount Tango Club's Milonga Corazón every 2nd Saturday.

Our previous teachers, Lori Coyle and Howard Schwartz, are unfortunately taking a break from teaching right now. We thank Lori and Howard for having taught us for so many years.

FAQs

Who can join Penn Tango?

Our core members consist of current students, staff, postdocs, alumni, faculty, and visiting scholars.

Memberships are open to non-Penn affiliates on a case-by-case basis. To join, please write to us at PennTango@gmail.com.

When and where does PennTango meet?

We meet every Monday on campus unless there is a holiday. The exact locations will be shared with members by email.

Do I need a partner?

No! Everyone rotates partners throughout the class to facilitate learning from different dancers.

You are welcome to join with an existing partner, but this is not a requirement.

Do I need specific shoes?

For beginners, socks are just fine!

More experienced dancers may want to buy their own shoes online as Philadelphia's rock-and-mortar dance store has unfortunately closed. Most ballroom and Latin dance shoes should work for tango.

For your first pair of dance heels however, we do not advise going above 3 inches in heel height as that may make balancing more difficult.

How much are club dues and what do they cover?

Club dues are collected once per semester at the beginning of term, and covers all classes and practicas.

You are welcome to attend your first class for free before deciding whether to formally join the club.

External milongas (dance balls) that we attend as a group will cost on average $15-25 per event, but this is entirely optional.

Is it too late to register?

Not at all! You can register at any point during the semester.

What else should I wear?

For class and practica, there is no particular dress code other than for ease of moment.

If you would like to join our field trips to a milonga (dance ball), please note that the more formal the occasion, the more attendees will dress up.

Welcome to PennTango!

Since 2009, PennTango has been promoting the enjoyment of Argentine tango at the University of Pennsylvania. Argentine Tango is a highly social dance form, emphasizing connection and improvisation. PennTango's membership consists of a fun group of social dancers interested in improving their tango skills and building a larger community to go out dancing with!  We are not a performance group, and do not limit membership or hold auditions. We are open to all Penn students, faculty, staff and alumni!

You can reach us at penntango@gmail.com or our Instagram page.
