Types of Strokes
One of the most fundamental pen and ink drawing techniques is the use of different types of strokes to create value, texture, and form. Strokes are the lines or marks made by the pen on the paper. There are many types of strokes, but some of the most common ones are:
Hatching: This technique involves drawing a series of parallel lines. The closer the lines are together (denser), the darker the value. Hatching can be used to create shading, shadows, and gradients. Hatching can also follow the contour of the object to create a sense of volume and dimension.
Cross-hatching: This technique involves drawing a series of intersecting hatching lines (criss-cross). The more layers of cross-hatching, the darker the value. Cross-hatching can be used to create more contrast, depth, and texture.
Scribble stroke: This technique involves drawing a series of overlapping scribbly or squiggly lines. The closer the lines are together (denser), the darker the value. Scribble stroke can be used to create a loose, expressive, and organic effect.
Stippling: This technique involves drawing a series of small dots. The closer the dots are together (denser), the darker the value. Stippling can be used to create a fine, detailed, and textured effect.

Painting with Ink
Another pen and ink drawing technique is painting with ink. This technique involves using a paint brush and diluted ink to create washes of different values. Painting with ink can create a smooth, soft, and fluid effect that is similar to watercolor painting. Painting with ink can also be combined with other pen and ink drawing techniques to create more variety and contrast.
To paint with ink, you will need a permanent ink that is waterproof, such as India ink or acrylic ink. You will also need a palette with wells to mix different ratios of ink and water. You can use any type of paint brush, but a round brush with a fine tip is recommended for more control and precision.
