If you want a rugged, modular storage solution designed specifically for securing loose gear on a truck bed or roof rack with heavy-duty handles and tie-down plates, choose Pelican Cargo Case BX90R; if you need a massive, aerodynamic, all-in-one hard shell that locks directly to your factory cross bars for long-distance road trips, choose PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier.
• Pelican Cargo Case BX90R: Its biggest strength is the heavy-duty construction with dedicated tie-down plates and handles for versatile mounting; its trade-off is that it requires a separate roof mount system and lacks an integrated locking mechanism.
• PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier: Its biggest strength is the massive 11 cubic feet of enclosed, weatherproof space with an included lock and tool-free installation on cross bars; its trade-off is that it is a fixed shape that cannot be used as a standalone crate without a rack.
• Choose the Pelican if you are building a custom setup for towing or hauling equipment in a truck bed where you need to strap down odd-shaped items securely.
• Choose the PM PERFORMOTOR if you need a permanent, streamlined addition to your SUV or crossover that maximizes interior volume while keeping everything dry and locked up.
The Pelican Cargo Case BX90R is built for people who view their vehicle as a workhorse rather than just a commuter car. This isn't a sleek box designed to hide away from view; it is a utilitarian container meant to take a beating. The defining feature here is the construction. With dimensions of 36 inches by 20 inches by 11.5 inches, it offers a substantial footprint, but more importantly, it comes equipped with heavy-duty handles and tie-down plates. These aren't afterthoughts; they are integral parts of the design intended to keep the cargo absolutely immovable once secured.
This product shines when you are towing or transporting gear that doesn't fit neatly into a standard box. Because it is designed to be mounted on a roof rack or directly in a truck bed using a separate Cargo Roof Mount (sold separately), it gives you flexibility. You can strap it down in the back of a pickup with lashing points that are part of the case itself. The black finish is tough, and the weather-resistant build ensures your tools, camping stoves, or sports equipment stay dry even in a torrential downpour. However, you must understand that this is a component, not a complete system. Without purchasing the specific mounting hardware separately, it remains just a very durable box sitting on your roof.
You should buy the Pelican Cargo Case BX90R if you are a contractor, a weekend warrior with a truck, or someone who needs to secure irregular loads that might shift in a standard cargo box. If you prioritize the ability to lash down heavy, awkward items over the convenience of an integrated lock and streamlined shape, this is the right path. Conversely, if you are looking for a plug-and-play solution that looks like a finished part of your vehicle and offers immediate security without buying extra brackets, you should skip this option entirely. It demands effort to install correctly but rewards you with superior stability for heavy loads.

The PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier is engineered for the family road trip, the ski vacation, or the cross-country drive where every inch of interior space counts. With a massive 11 cubic feet of internal storage, this unit dwarfs most competitors in terms of raw volume. It measures 53 inches long, 34 inches wide, and 15 inches high, providing enough room to swallow full-size suitcases, bulky camping gear, skis, or kayaks. The design prioritizes aerodynamics; the textured black shell is shaped to cut through the air, reducing wind noise and fuel consumption compared to older, boxier designs. This matters when you are driving at highway speeds for hours on end.
What sets this carrier apart immediately is the "all-in-one" nature of the package. Unlike the Pelican, which is a bare case, this unit includes ABS plastic mounting brackets and all necessary hardware for a quick, tool-free installation on factory or aftermarket cross bars. It fits most SUVs, trucks, sedans, crossovers, and EVs, provided you have cross bars to attach to. The inclusion of a key-based locking system adds a layer of security that is crucial for travelers leaving valuables in the trunk. The lid opens 14 inches wide, making it easy to load and unload even when the car is parked in a tight spot.
You should choose the PM PERFORMOTOR if you need a permanent upgrade to your vehicle's storage capabilities without modifying the car itself. It is ideal for those who want a weatherproof, impact-resistant shell that stays put regardless of UV rays or road debris. The rugged ABS plastic construction ensures longevity, meaning this will last for years of outdoor use. However, if you do not have cross bars, or if your vehicle relies on roof rails without cross bars, this will not fit. Additionally, because it is a single molded piece, you cannot use it as a standalone crate in a truck bed without a rack. It is strictly a roof-mounted solution. If you value ease of installation, high volume, and a quiet ride over the ability to strap down loose, shifting cargo, this is the clear winner.
• Best for versatility in a truck bed → Pelican Cargo Case BX90R, thanks to its tie-down plates and lack of a fixed lid shape.
• Best for sheer storage volume → PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier, offering 11 cubic feet versus the Pelican's smaller footprint.
• Best for ease of installation → PM PERFORMOTOR, which includes all mounting hardware for tool-free attachment to cross bars.
• Best for securing heavy, shifting loads → Pelican Cargo Case BX90R, due to the dedicated tie-down plates and heavy-duty handles.
• Best for security features → PM PERFORMOTOR, which comes with an integrated locking system and key.
• Best for aerodynamic efficiency → PM PERFORMOTOR, with its smooth, curved shape designed to reduce wind drag.
• Best for modular setups → Pelican Cargo Case BX90R, as it is designed to be mounted via a separate system allowing for different configurations.
• Best for long-term weather protection → Both are excellent, but PM PERFORMOTOR offers a fully sealed, hard-shell enclosure with no external straps to loosen.
After weighing the specs and the real-world applications of both units, I would buy the PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier for my personal travel needs. While the Pelican is undeniably tough, its requirement for a separate mount and lack of an integrated lock make it feel incomplete for general use. The PM PERFORMOTOR delivers everything a traveler needs in one package: massive capacity, a secure lock, and a quiet, aerodynamic design that works seamlessly with modern vehicles. However, if I were towing a boat or hauling construction materials where I needed to strap down loose gear directly to a carrier, I would switch to the Pelican Cargo Case BX90R for its superior lashing points. Ultimately, for anyone looking for a reliable storage solution for towing or road trips, the PM PERFORMOTOR is the smarter, more convenient choice.
It does not include the mounting brackets required for direct attachment to a rack.
No, this carrier is designed for vehicles with factory or aftermarket cross bars. You must verify your roof type and cross bar width before ordering, as it requires these bars for installation.
Exceeding this limit could compromise safety or damage the unit.
Both units are described as weather-resistant or weatherproof. The PM PERFORMOTOR offers a fully sealed hard shell with a locking lid, while the Pelican is noted for its weather-resistant construction, though it may require additional sealing depending on how it is mounted.
