My line of research focuses on cerebral activations of respiratory sensation, especially on internal and external factors that modulate neural mechanisms of respiratory interoception. By using the electrophysiological respiratory-related evoked potential, we measure respiratory sensation and perception regarding both pre-attentive and attentive neural processes in different emotional conditions and contexts. Recently, by using neuroimaging methods including functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography, we investigate brain neural activations in response to respiratory mechanical stimuli as well as factors that modulate these brain substrates in respiratory sensation and the central neural gating mechanism.

We have ongoing research projects with the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Chest Medicine of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to investigate respiratory sensation in individuals with affective and respiratory diseases. Our laboratory is located in the Biofeedback Room in the Department of Psychiatry of the Taoyuan Branch of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
